Curiosity's SAM Instrument Finds Water and More in Surface Sample
.
    The first scoop of soil analyzed by the analytical suite in the belly of NASA's Curiosity rover reveals that fine materials on the surface of the planet contain several percent water by weight. The results were published today in Science as one article in a five-paper special section on the Curiosity mission.
    "One of the most exciting results from this very first solid sample ingested by Curiosity is the high percentage of water in the soil," said Laurie Leshin, lead author of one paper and dean of the School Science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. "About 2 percent of the soil on the surface of Mars is made up of water, which is a great resource, and interesting scientifically." The sample also released significant carbon dioxide, oxygen and sulfur compounds when heated.
    Curiosity landed in Gale Crater on the surface of Mars on Aug. 6, 2012, charged with answering the question: "Could Mars have once harbored life?" To do that, Curiosity is the first rover on Mars to carry equipment for gathering and processing samples of rock and soil. One of those instruments was employed in the current research: the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument suite, which includes a gas chromatograph, a mass spectrometer and a tunable laser spectrometer. These tools enable SAM to identify a wide range of chemical compounds and determine the ratios of different isotopes of key elements.
    "This work not only demonstrates that SAM is working beautifully on Mars, but also shows how SAM fits into Curiosity's powerful and comprehensive suite of scientific instruments," said Paul Mahaffy, principal investigator for SAM at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "By combining analyses of water and other volatiles from SAM with mineralogical, chemical and geological data from Curiosity's other instruments, we have the most comprehensive information ever obtained on Martian surface fines. These data greatly advance our understanding surface processes and the action of water on Mars."
    Thirty-four researchers, all members of the Mars Science Laboratory Science Team, contributed to the paper.
    In this study, scientists used the rover's scoop to collect dust, dirt and finely grained soil from a sandy patch known as Rocknest. Researchers fed portions of the fifth scoop into SAM. Inside SAM, the "fines"—the dust, dirt and fine soil—were heated to 1,535 degrees F (835 C). 
    Baking the sample also revealed a compound containing chlorine and oxygen, likely chlorate or perchlorate, previously found near the north pole on Mars. Finding such compounds at Curiosity's equatorial site suggests they could be distributed more globally. The analysis also suggests the presence of carbonate materials, which form in the presence of water.
    In addition to determining the amount of the major gases released, SAM also analyzed ratios of isotopes of hydrogen and carbon in the released water and carbon dioxide. Isotopes are variants of the same chemical element with different numbers of neutrons, and therefore different atomic weights. SAM found that the ratio of some isotopes in the soil is similar to the ratio found in atmospheric samples analyzed earlier, indicating that the surface soil has interacted heavily with the atmosphere.
    "The isotopic ratios, including hydrogen-to-deuterium ratios and carbon isotopes, tend to support the idea that as the dust is moving around the planet, it's reacting with some of the gases from the atmosphere," Leshin said.
    SAM can also search for trace levels of organic compounds. Although several simple organic compounds were detected in the experiments at Rocknest, they aren't clearly Martian in origin. Instead, it is likely that they formed during the high-temperature experiments, when the heat decomposed perchlorates in the Rocknest samples, releasing oxygen and chlorine that then reacted with terrestrial organics already present in the SAM instrument.
    A related paper, published in the Journal of Geophysical Research-Planets, details the findings of perchlorates and other chlorine-bearing compounds in the Rocknest sample. This paper is led by Daniel Glavin, a Mars Science Laboratory Science Team member at Goddard.  
    Glavin notes that SAM has the ability to perform another kind of experiment to address the question of whether organic molecules are present in the Martian samples. The SAM suite includes nine fluid-filled cups which hold chemicals that can react with organic molecules if present in the soil samples. "Because these reactions occur at low temperatures, the presence of perchlorates will not inhibit the detection of Martian organic compounds," said Glavin.
    The combined results shed light on the composition of the planet's surface, while offering direction for future research.
    "Mars has kind of a global layer, a layer of surface soil that has been mixed and distributed by frequent dust storms. So a scoop of this stuff is basically a microscopic Mars rock collection," said Leshin. "If you mix many grains of it together, you probably have an accurate picture of typical Martian crust. By learning about it in any one place you're learning about the entire planet."

SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft berthed* to the International Space Station at approximately 8:56 a.m. EST Sunday, installed onto the Earth-facing port of the Harmony module. Dragon arrived to station with over 2,300 pounds of cargo and packaging to ensure safe travel, and during the next 22 days, astronauts will unload and then load cargo, including materials to support critical science experiments. Dragon will return to Earth with over 3,000 pounds of cargo, and has a targeted splashdown in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Baja, Calif. on March 25. Dragon is the only spacecraft in the world today capable of returning significant amounts of cargo to Earth.

On Oct. 7th, (my Birthday,) SpaceX is set to launch the first of a dozen operational missions for NASA that will deliver more than 1,000 pounds of supplies to the International Space Station. Launch time is set for 7:35pm CDT from Space Launch Complex 40 at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, just a few miles south of the old Space Shuttle Launch Pads.
Backup launch opportunities are also available on Oct. 8th and Oct. 9th, if needed.

Launch Day Weather Remains 60 Percent "Go"

The weather forecast remains 60 percent favorable for launch of the SpaceX Commercial Resupply Services-1 (CRS-1) mission.

The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket was rolled to the launch pad at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station Space Launch Complex 40 Saturday night, following a slight weather delay. The rocket will be elevated to its vertical position today, powered and fueled ahead of the 7:35pm CDT liftoff.

'Everything is Looking Real Good for Launch'

The weather forecast for tonight's liftoff has improved to an 80 percent chance of acceptable conditions at the 7:35pm CDT launch time. There are no technical problems with the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket nor with the Dragon capsule loaded with cargo bound for the International Space Station. "Everything is looking real good for launch this evening," NASA Launch Commentator Mike Curie said. The rocket is to launch from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla., which is adjacent to NASA's Kennedy Space Center.

Forecast Calls for 60 Percent Chance of Acceptable Conditions

SpaceX is putting the finishing touches on its Dragon capsule and Falcon 9 rocket as launch day nears for the SpaceX CRS-1 cargo flight to the International Space Station. Weather forecasters are eyeing the possibility of thick clouds and rain as Sunday's launch time approaches. Liftoff is scheduled for 7:35pm CDT with an instantaneous launch window. The Dragon will carry about 1,000 pounds of experiment equipment and crew supplies to the orbiting laboratory during the first operational cargo mission for the company's flagship launcher and spacecraft.
SpaceX Managers Gave the “Go” for Sunday Launch

SpaceX managers held a Launch Readiness Review Friday afternoon and gave a “go” to proceed toward launch of the SpaceX Commercial Resupply Services-1 (CRS-1) mission on Sunday.

NASA Astronaut Neil Armstrong passed away today at the age of 82

Astronaut Neil Armstrong, first man to step foot on the moon, passed away today at the age of 82. Mr. Armstrong's family released a statement today saying he had died from complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures performed on August 8th, just three days after his 82nd birthday.

Curiosity - Robot Geologist and Chemist in One!

The above artist's concept features NASA's Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover, a mobile robot for investigating Mars' past or present ability to sustain microbial life.

Curiosity will land near the Martian equator about 10:31pm, Aug. 5th PDT (12:31am August 6th EDT).
.
In this picture above, the rover examines a rock on Mars with a set of tools at the end of the rover's arm, which extends about 7 feet (2 meters). Two instruments on the arm can study rocks up close. A drill can collect sample material from inside of rocks and a scoop can pick up samples of soil. The arm can sieve the samples and deliver fine powder to instruments inside the rover for thorough analysis.

The mast, or rover's "head," rises to about 6.9 feet (2.1 meters) above ground level, about as tall as a basketball player. This mast supports two remote-sensing science instruments: the Mast Camera, or "eyes," for stereo color viewing of surrounding terrain and material collected by the arm; and, the Chemistry and Camera instrument, which uses a laser to vaporize a speck of material on rocks up to about 23 feet (7 meters) away and determines what elements the rocks are made of.

    With Mars looming ever larger in front of it, NASA's Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft and its Curiosity rover are in the final stages of preparing for entry, descent and landing on the Red Planet at 10:31pm PDT Aug. 5th, (1:31am EDT Aug. 6th). Curiosity remains in good health with all systems operating as expected. Today, the flight team uplinked and confirmed commands to make minor corrections to the spacecraft's navigation reference point parameters. This afternoon, as part of the onboard sequence of autonomous activities leading to the landing, catalyst bed heaters are being turned on to prepare the eight Mars Lander Engines that are part of MSL's descent propulsion system. As of 2:25pm PDT (5:25pm EDT), MSL was approximately 261,000 miles (420,039 kilometers) from Mars, closing in at a little more than 8,000 mph (about 3,600 meters per second).

    PASADENA, Calif. -- NASA's Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft is healthy and right on course for a landing in several hours that will be one of the most difficult feats of robotic exploration ever attempted.
.
    Emotions are strong in the control room at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., as the hours and miles race toward touchdown of the car-size Curiosity at about 10:31 p.m. PDT tonight (about 1:31 a.m. Aug. 6, EDT).
.
    "Excitement is building while the team is diligently monitoring the spacecraft," said Mission Manager Brian Portock of JPL. "It's natural to get anxious before a big event, but we believe we are very well prepared."
.
    Descent from the top of Mars' atmosphere to the surface will employ bold techniques enabling use of a smaller target area and heavier landed payload than were possible for any previous Mars mission. These innovations, if successful, will place a well-equipped mobile laboratory into a locale especially well-suited for this mission of discovery.  The same innovations advance NASA toward capabilities needed for human missions to Mars.

    Controllers decided Sunday morning to forgo the sixth and last opportunity on the mission calendar for a course-correction maneuver.  The spacecraft is headed for its target entry point at the top of Mars' atmosphere precisely enough without that maneuver.
.
    Later today, mission controllers will choose whether or not to use a last opportunity for updating onboard information the spacecraft will use during its autonomous control of the entry, descent and landing. Parameters on a motion tracker were adjusted Saturday for fine-tuning determination of the spacecraft's orientation during the descent.
.
    At the critical moment of Curiosity's touchdown, controllers and the rest of the world will be relying on NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter to provide immediate confirmation of a successful landing. Odyssey will turn to point in the right direction beforehand to listen to Curiosity during the landing. If for any reason that turn maneuver does not work, a successful landing cannot be confirmed until more than two hours later.

    The landing will end a 36-week flight from Earth and begin at two-year prime mission on Mars. Researchers will use Curiosity's 10 science instruments to investigate whether Martian environmental conditions have ever been favorable for microbial life.

Fingers crossed for a successful Mars landing!!! And I cannot wait for the first images to be sent back to earth, from mars, by this wonderful piece of machinery that has been made possible by pure American genius. (The first Mars pictures expected from Curiosity will be reduced-resolution fisheye black-and-white images received either in the first few minutes after touchdown or more than two hours later. Higher resolution and color images from other cameras could come later in the first week. Plans call for Curiosity to deploy a directional antenna on the first day after landing and raise the camera mast on the 2nd day.)
