Forecast Calls for 60 Percent Chance of Acceptable Conditions

SpaceX is putting the finishing touches on its Dragon capsule and Falcon 9 rocket as launch day nears for the SpaceX CRS-1 cargo flight to the International Space Station. Weather forecasters are eyeing the possibility of thick clouds and rain as Sunday's launch time approaches. Liftoff is scheduled for 7:35pm CDT with an instantaneous launch window. The Dragon will carry about 1,000 pounds of experiment equipment and crew supplies to the orbiting laboratory during the first operational cargo mission for the company's flagship launcher and spacecraft.

SpaceX Managers Gave the “Go” for Sunday Launch

SpaceX managers held a Launch Readiness Review Friday afternoon and gave a “go” to proceed toward launch of the SpaceX Commercial Resupply Services-1 (CRS-1) mission on Sunday.

On Saturday, NASA TV will air an International Space Station Science Briefing at 3pm EDT and the SpaceX CRS-1 Prelaunch News Conference at 6pm on NASA Television and on the Web at www.nasa.gov/ntv.

.

The weather forecast remains 60 percent favorable conditions for launch, Sunday.

    Space Shuttle Discovery departed NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida for the last time with an early-morning takeoff atop NASA's Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA). Instead of blazing a trail toward low Earth orbit, the agency's most-flown shuttle is on its way to Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va.

    The SCA transporting Discovery took off from Kennedy at 7am EDT, just as the first light dawned at the Shuttle Landing Facility. The ferry flight concluded at 11:05 a.m. when the aircraft touched down at Washington Dulles International Airport in Sterling, Va. …

SpaceX Dragon 'Looks Good' in Flight Readiness Review

NASA and SpaceX officials met Monday at Johnson Space Center in Houston for a detailed Flight Readiness Review meeting ahead of the second demonstration mission of the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft targeted to lift off on one of the company's Falcon 9 rockets.

.

The meeting, a standard part of NASA's pre-launch preparations, confirmed the cargo test flight to the International Space Station is on-track for an April 30th launch from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, adjacent to NASA's Kennedy Space Center. "Everything looks good heading to the April 30th launch date," said Bill Gerstenmaier, NASA's associate administrator for Human Exploration and Operations.

In preparation for the upcoming SpaceX demonstration flight, NASA astronaut Megan McArthur performed a crew equipment interface test March 28th in Florida. The test was part of current prelaunch preparations for the scheduled April 30th liftoff of the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

McArthur worked together with SpaceX flight controllers for five hours in their hangar at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station's Space Launch Complex-40, as the team entered its final phase of testing the Dragon capsule. The SpaceX launch is part of NASA's Commercial Orbital Transportation Services partnership with U.S. industry. Originally posted on Thursday, March 29^th, 2012

About today’s Image: Three Generations of Rovers with Crouching Engineers

Two spacecraft engineers join a grouping of vehicles providing a comparison of three generations of Mars rovers developed at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. The setting is JPL's Mars Yard testing area.

Front and center is the flight spare for the first Mars rover, Sojourner, which landed on Mars in 1997 as part of the Mars Pathfinder Project. On the left is a Mars Exploration Rover Project test rover that is a working sibling to Spirit and Opportunity, which landed on Mars in 2004. On the right is a Mars Science Laboratory test rover the size of that project's Mars rover, Curiosity, which is on course for landing on Mars in August 2012.

Sojourner and its flight spare, named Marie Curie, are 2 feet (65 centimeters) long. The Mars Exploration Rover Project's rover, including the "Surface System Test Bed" rover in this photo, are 5.2 feet (1.6 meters) long. The Mars Science Laboratory Project's Curiosity rover and "Vehicle System Test Bed" rover, on the right, are 10 feet (3 meters) long.

It chaps my backside to hear so many in the News Media and the elite politicians making jokes of Newt’s comments about going to the moon and beyond.

Dare he say something about putting a presence on the moon and in a short time and trying to place a US Colony there.

Makes good since to me to cut loose the private markets and let them have at it!

.

Can you imagine the jobs, monies and all the new science and inventions to come out of such an adventure? And it would surely help keep Florida as the main Space Workshop and Launch Site of the world.

.

USA, wins… The American peoples win… and in the long run… the world wins.

.

Newt is NOT an old man with crazy ideas… but a very, VERY smart visionary. And that is one thing we so desperately need now, in the White House, to move this country forward.

Capt. Lucas Frokjer, officer in charge of the flightline for Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 463, reunites with his family after returning from a seven-month deployment with HMH-463. The squadron arrived at Hangar 105 Sept. 17 and were welcomed home by a large crowd of family and friends. The squadron was replaced by HMH-363 who deployed to Afghanistan in August in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
