The Army's Criminal Investigation Command is investigating a possible homicide in the Aug. 15 death of a 20-year-old detainee at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison, U. S. military officials in Baghdad said today.
Fellow inmates found the young man unconscious Aug. 15. He was taken to the 344th Field Hospital in Baghdad, where he was pronounced dead.
The detainee's remains will be transferred to his family after an autopsy, which is standard procedure for detainees who die in custody of Multinational Force Iraq. The individual's name and nationality were not provided.
Elsewhere, multinational ground forces in Anbar province, acting on a tip from Iraqi civilians early this morning, found and destroyed a cache of about 30 152 mm artillery shells, which military officials think were intended for use as improvised explosive devices.
Security forces confirmed no friendly or enemy personnel were in the building before destroying the building and its contents with an air strike.
No civilians were harmed during the operation, which took place in its entirety before daybreak. One terrorist was killed during the initial stages of the operation, officials said.
