Brent crude on the ICE futures exchange settled up $1.18, or 1%, to $115.97 a barrel... With anti-government protests in Egypt sparking concerns this morning over regional stability... Crude oil prices spiked Friday, having increased by more than 4% and reaching near $90 a barrel, ($89.65) before retreating in early afternoon trading. OUCH!

* The Wall Street Journal has the following report posted up on their website today and it starts off like this... Tanker stocks surged Friday as investors speculated that the civil unrest in Egypt could lead to a shutdown of the Suez Canal, an incident that would likely spark a sharp uptick in demand for ships... The Suez Canal is a key transit point for oil and fuel shipments from the Persian Gulf to the Western Hemisphere, and a closure there would mean ships would have to travel around the southern tip of Africa instead, adding thousands of miles to their journeys, and likely tightening shipping capacity... There doesn't appear to be any solid indication the canal is in danger of shutting down, but it's seen as a possibility as protestors rallied in the streets of Egypt for the fourth straight day against President Hosni Mubarak...

* Bloomberg.com had the following report posted up on their website this New Years Eve and it goes in part like this... “Shale production is probably going to be with us forever and it can limit gains in gas prices,” said Peter Beutel, president of trading advisory company Cameron Hanover Inc. in New Canaan, Connecticut. “But if we have environmental rulings that certain states cannot produce shale gas, it’s going to take so much supply off the market.”...

Transocean Ltd. today reported a fire onboard its semisubmersible drilling rig Deepwater Horizon. The incident occurred April 20, 2010 at approximately 10:00 p.m. central time in the United States Gulf of Mexico. The rig was located approximately 41 miles offshore Louisiana on Mississippi Canyon block 252... Transocean's Emergency and Family Response Teams are working with the U.S. Coast Guard and lease operator BP Exploration & Production, Inc. to care for all rig personnel and search for missing rig personnel. A substantial majority of the 126 member crew is safe but some crew members remain unaccounted for at this time. Injured personnel are receiving medical treatment as necessary. The names and hometowns of injured persons are being withheld until family members can be notified...

But this time there was one - and at least 12 people are missing and seven are critically injured after an explosion on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico, according to the U.S. Coast Guard...

The previous statement, Missing workers may have been found in lifeboat, has not panned out as we all first hoped. The search is still on for the 11 missing.
.
The initial reports that 12 workers were missing... turned out to be only 11. There were actually a total of 126 crew members on the rig at the time of the accident. The U.S. Coast Guard has counted a total of 98 survivors on two oil service boats and 17 injured... seven who were critically injured and had been taken to hospitals. Sadly though... Eleven are still unaccounted for as of this update.

WIND FARMS in upstate New York are interfering with National Weather Service Doppler radars, making it more difficult to detect and assess approaching lake effect snow storms... The spinning blades on the towering turbines can cause problems by reflecting some of the radar's signal, which can be falsely interpreted as wind or precipitation. The reflections can make storms coming off lakes Erie and Ontario look stronger than they actually are, but the structures can also act like a wall and hide a storm from forecasters... "It's more of an annoyance than a critical issue," said Bill Hibbert, a meteorologist and radar specialist with the weather service in Buffalo...

The Obama Plan is in all a Plan most ALL Americans wish to achieve in the years to come. But our Energy needs, until then, have to be answered NOW and we have but TWO Choices.

1) Stay dependent on Foreign Oil and Gas, as we are now, for the next 10/20/30 years or more. OR…
2) Start Drilling and using our own Natural Resources while we let the Obama Plan have time to work itself out.

We in Louisiana have long known of the economic benefits of oil and gas exploration and production. It creates jobs, provides revenues to the state and local governments and helps bring family energy bills down as the supply of energy on the market increases.
.
I recently led a group of committed Senate and House members in introducing a bill that would increase our domestic energy production and in the process save or create two million jobs and help bring real relief to family budgets across America… all without costing the taxpayers more of their hard-earned money. It is called the No Cost Stimulus Act of 2009, and it was introduced with support from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, National Black Chamber of Commerce, National Association of Manufacturers, Americans for Tax Reform and Alliance for Worker Freedom.
.
The bill forces the Secretary of the Interior to move forward with offshore leases rather than continuing to block energy development off the East and West Coasts. It would also open ANWR for oil and gas development and use the revenues derived from production to support alternative and renewable energy.
.
The No Cost Stimulus bill also reconciles outstanding environmental law issues that have been used to slow production and development by continually tying up projects in lawsuits that prevent job creation. And it extends state boundaries so states have more say in what happens off their coasts, providing them with a tool for greater energy production opportunities and creating new opportunities for individual states to increase their own revenues without asking the federal government to bail them out.

The following is from an e-mail I received Friday by Mr. Pickens himself…

I wanted to make certain you've seen our new Pickens Plan ad. This one talks about how our dependence on foreign oil can have real national security repercussions.

Just last month Russia cut off supplies of natural gas to Europe because they were in a price squabble with Ukraine. The Europeans had to beg Russia to turn the gas back on because it was the dead of winter and people were in danger of freezing to death.
.
Here's the thing: Europe doesn't import nearly the same percentage of natural gas from Russia as we do oil from the Middle East, Africa and Venezuela. We are at real risk of being dictated to by foreign governments who don't like us very much because we continue to import almost 70 percent of the oil we use every day.

FairHome.co.uk had this GREAT read posted up on their website Sunday that I had to share with you. It starts off like this... The National Grid is piloting a new energy creation technology that harnesses the energy stored in high pressure gas pipes... Natural gas has extremely high pressure when it is sourced from underground... This pressure has to be reduced eight times before the gas is suitable for use in homes - a process that wastes huge amounts of latent energy... The new technology uses a turbine to harness the energy created when the gas pressure is reduced, and this energy is used to generate electricity...

Following is from an email I received last week by Mr. Pickens himself.

It goes as follows....

Army!

We have to stay on offense! We can’t let the new Congress and the new Administration shove our dependence on foreign oil to the back burner.
.
Here’s why.
When we started the Pickens Plan last July, oil was at about $147 per barrel, gasoline at the pump was $4.11, and we were importing about 70 percent of the oil we use. Today oil is $100 per barrel less, but we are still importing about 70 percent of our oil.
.
Why is this important? Because we are still at the mercy of foreign governments and unstable areas of the world for our oil supply.
.
It is still a crisis, but it’s also an opportunity for us to fix it.
.
Look at the headlines from just the past couple of days.
.
- Oil up $5 on OPEC cuts.
- Russia cut off natural gas supplies to Ukraine.
- Iran calls for oil embargo for supporters of Israel.
.
Just before the holidays, OPEC met to try to raise oil prices. OPEC delivers 40 percent of the daily oil supply. They decided to cut their output by 2.2 million barrels per day to try and get the price back in the $70 range.
.
You’ve heard me tell you before that if consumption runs short of supply, then the only way to balance the books is by raising the price. What have we seen? Gasoline at the pump has jumped back over $2 per gallon in many areas and is moving back up.
.
Next headline: On New Year’s Day, Russia cut off natural gas supplies to Ukraine in a dispute over prices and payments.
.
According to Reuter’s news service, “That has hit natural gas supplies to countries in eastern and southern Europe facing freezing temperatures and has worried European countries, which get one fifth of their gas through pipelines that cross Ukraine.”
.
Think about that: The Russian government is willing to force its customers to pay whatever price it sets by cutting off supplies; not threatening to cut off supplies, but by actually doing it in the coldest part of winter.
.
We don’t rely on Russia for our natural gas. We don’t import any of it, and we have plenty of our own natural gas supply.
.
The problem comes from that second headline – what happens if Iran and other Mideast and African countries decide to use oil as a weapon against us like Russia is using natural gas as a weapon against Ukraine?
.
I’m not making this up. Here is what the Iranian News Agency reported over the weekend:

.
"Pointing at Westerners' dependence on the Islamic countries' oil and energy resources, [Iranian leaders] called for cutting the export of crude oil to the Zionist regime's supporters the world over.”
.
Iran understands how to leverage our over-dependence on foreign oil. OPEC understands how to manage output. We are left without any weapons in this price war.
.
We have to remind our leaders in Washington that whether oil is a $50 a barrel or $150 a barrel it is the level of our dependence on foreign oil, not just the price, which puts us all at the mercy of unfriendly foreign governments and you don’t know when they will move against us.
