An Afghan immigrant plotted for more than a year to detonate homemade bombs in the United States, had recently bought bomb-making supplies from beauty supply stores and was looking for "urgent" help in the past two weeks to make explosives, an indictment charged Thursday... Najibullah Zazi -- a 24-year-old airport shuttle driver who authorities said received explosives and weapons training from al-Qaida during a trip to Pakistan last year -- was charged in New York with conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction...

Federal investigators probing an alleged bombing plot with suspected ties to al Qaeda are trying to track purchases of chemicals that could be used to make explosives, as three men charged as a result of the probe appeared in court Monday... Two officials familiar with the probe said investigators were combing records on the purchases of chemicals, particularly hydrogen peroxide, that could be used to make bombs. Peroxide-based explosives were used in a deadly attack on London's subway and bus system in July 2005, and al Qaeda's interest in such explosives has been a top concern for the Federal Bureau of Investigation for almost two years, according to intelligence assessments made public...

The Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested three men from Afghanistan on charges of making false statements in connection with a terrorist investigation, according to the Department of Justice... Federal authorities in Colorado arrested Najibullah Zazi, 24, and his father, Mohammed Wali Zazi, 53, the Justice Department said in an e-mailed statement. The third man, Ahmad Wais Afzali, 37, was apprehended in New York... “The arrests are part of an ongoing and fast-paced investigation,” David Kris, assistant attorney general for national security, said in the statement. “It is important to note that we have no specific information regarding the timing, location or target of any planned attack.”...

An al-Qaida inspired group which briefly proclaimed "the birth of an Islamic emirate" in the Gaza Strip included a Syrian national who was believed to be the head of its military wing, Hamas confirmed today after the group was overrun and its leader killed by police.

The arrest of a woman suspected of grooming rape victims to become female suicide bombers in Iraq has dealt a blow to the network of extremists that orchestrates such attacks, a senior Iraqi official said yesterday... Samira Ahmed Jassim, 51, is accused of recruiting more than 80 women to become human bombs, including 28 who actually carried out attacks... She has apparently confessed to helping to organize the rape of young Iraqi women... She would then play on the shame associated with victims of rape in Iraqi society to convince the women to become suicide bombers as their only means of escape...

US intelligence officials contacted by The Long War Journal would not confirm or deny Azzam's death. "It is far too soon to know, and northwestern Pakistan isn't the easiest place in the world to find out if these strikes succeed or fail," one senior official said. "We've had far too many false positives this year to be certain this hit was successful."... The U.S. State Department is recommending that all non-emergency American staffers at the U.S. embassy in Yemen, along with their family members, leave the country following Wednesday's deadly attack... The State Department issued a similar directive in April after attacks against the embassy and a residential compound. That order was lifted last month, but has again been re-instated... In a travel warning issued Thursday, the State Department said it would not authorize any travel outside the capital city of Sanaa, and asked U.S. citizens to defer all non-essential travel into the country... Those choosing to remain in Yemen were asked to "exercise caution"... be vigilant, avoid crowds, keep a low profile, and vary times and routes for travel...

The TREND News Agency website brings us this bit of good news and it starts off link this... The international terrorist organization al-Qaeda confirmed on Islamist websites Sunday that its chemical and biological weapons expert, Abu Khabab al-Masri, had been killed in a US airstrike on a Taliban hide-out in Pakistan... Three other al-Qaeda members and an unnamed number of children were killed in the airstrike on July 28... Al-Masri, also known as Midhat Mursi, is believed to have headed al-Qaeda's weapons-of-mass-destruction programme under the code name al-Zabadi (curdled milk)...

A senior al-Qaeda leader in Afghanistan, Abu Laith al-Libi, has been killed, Western counter-terrorism officials have told the BBC... News of his death emerged on a website used by Islamist groups. Ekhlaas.org said he had "fallen as a martyr"... There is speculation that he was killed by a US missile strike in the North Waziristan area of Pakistan this week... A dozen militants were reported killed in the attack. US intelligence agencies said they were checking the reports...

The attempted reopening today in Islamabad of the Red Mosque complex that saw a bloody confrontation between security forces and militant Islamic radicals on July 10-11 is a reminder of the challenges confronting Pakistan's embattled President Pervez Musharraf. The event was descending into rioting as Islamic hard-liners sought to retake the facilities.

Another reminder is taking shape in Washington, where legislators are pressing to tie U.S. aid to Pakistan's success in combating Al-Qaeda. Reuters reported today that U.S. lawmakers are nearing agreement on a bill to would make funds contingent on a crackdown on Al-Qaeda, Taliban, and other militants.

With Pakistan long a source of concern in the U.S.-led counterterrorism effort, there is also new speculation about whether the U.S. military in Afghanistan might be tempted to cross the border into Pakistan to respond to any threat. In the United States, officials have declined to rule out direct strikes against Al-Qaeda targets in Pakistani territory, angering some Pakistanis...

Here are a couple interesting reads I ran across over the last few days and I couldn’t help put to post them together this morning. I for one find the 1st story more relevant than the 2nd ... however both stories I believe to hold true.

The FT.com, (The Financial Times) website had this read out a few days back... Evidence that Iranian territory is being used as a base by al-Qaeda to help in terrorist operations in Iraq and elsewhere is growing, say western officials... It is not clear how much the al-Qaeda operation, described by one official as a money and communications hub, is being tolerated or encouraged by the Iranian government, they said... The group’s operatives, who link the al-Qaeda leadership in Pakistan with their disciples in Iraq, the Levant and North Africa, move with relative freedom in the country, they said...
