An Afghan National Army soldier was injured when an ANA and coalition convoy came under attack in the Shah Wali Kot district of Afghanistan's Kandahar province yesterday, military officials reported today.
A single assailant attempted to use his vehicle to ram a coalition vehicle. He also threw a hand grenade and engaged the convoy with small-arms fire. The assailant was killed when forces in the convoy returned fire. ANA and coalition forces also detonated his car on the scene after discovering that it was loaded with explosives.
"ANA and coalition forces demonstrated their vigilance and their professionalism by their response to this incident," said Army Col. James Yonts, spokesman for Combined Forces Command Afghanistan. "Attacks such as these will not deter them in their efforts to provide a safe environment for the Afghan people.”
The ANA now has more than 30,000 soldiers dedicated to preventing the re-emergence of terrorism in Afghanistan, CFC-A officials said.
