The Environmental Protection Agency formally recognized the United States Air Force for outstanding support of green power and renewable energy at a ceremony Wednesday night in Washington, D.C.
The 2006 U.S. EPA Climate Protection Award winners included individuals, organizations and companies from around the world for their efforts to protect the Earth's climate and stratospheric ozone layer.
The Air Force, which is America's largest green power customer and third largest in the world, was recognized for demonstrating its commitment to the environment by investing in significant on-site biomass, wind farm and photovoltaic generation. Several Air Force installations meet 100% of their electrical needs through renewable green power.
In 2005, the Air Force expanded on-site renewable energy projects and increased green power purchases by over 300%, making the Air Force one of the first organizations in the world to purchase over one million megawatt hours of green power. In 2004, the Air Force's purchase of 321 thousand megawatt hours of green power earned the top ranking in the U.S. EPA Green Power Partnership and the Green Power Partner of the Year Award.
The result of these efforts include a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 1.38 billion pounds annually, equivalent to saving 1.5 million barrels of oil or taking 135,000 cars off the road.
The Air Force continues to seek out new renewable energy opportunities and looks to maintain its leadership in this arena.
