Pelosi Premium: Will House Dems Continue Voting to Keep "Commonsense Plan" to Lower Gas Prices Under Wraps?

House Republicans to Force More Votes Today to Demand that Speaker Pelosi Finally Unveil Her "Commonsense Plan" to Bring Down Gas Prices

Washington, May 7 - More than two years after Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) promised the American people she and her Democratic colleagues would help them deal with the price at the pump, she has yet to reveal her “commonsense plan” to lower gas prices or the “real solutions that will lower the price at the pump.” On January 4, 2007, the day that Rep. Pelosi became Speaker, the American people were paying an average of $2.33 per gallon for gasoline. Sixteen months later the American people are shelling out an average $3.62 per gallon – a whopping $1.29 more than the day she took the gavel. And her vaunted “commonsense plan” still remains a secret. This $1.29 Pelosi Premium is stretching family budgets, hurting small businesses, and forcing communities from coast to coast to cut critical services such as school bus transportation and law enforcement.

That’s why last month,
Rep. Dean Heller (R-NV) introduced legislation demanding that Speaker Pelosi finally reveal her “commonsense plan.” Since then, House Democrats have voted no less than five times against real, bipartisan solutions to address the Pelosi Premium:

Today, during consideration of two housing measures (H.R. 3221 and H.R. 5818), House Republicans will once again give Democrats the chance to address our nation’s soaring gas prices. Do Democrats honestly believe American families want them to continue voting to keep the Speaker’s plan under wraps at a time when they are feeling the pain of the Pelosi Premium? If they do, they’ll vote down the Heller legislation again today. But if Democrats are really serious about fulfilling the Speaker’s promise to the American people, they’ll finally do the right thing by voting to bring the “commonsense plan” to light.

If Speaker Pelosi has a plan that can help ease the strain of high fuel costs on American families, small businesses, and communities, she should reveal it. The American people expect both parties to work together to make our country more energy independent, lower energy prices here at home, and secure our energy future.
