New Jersey Governor Jon S. Corzine in Critical but Stable Condition after Car Accident

Governor Jon S. Corzine broke his left leg and several ribs when his motorcade was involved in an accident on the Garden State Parkway Thursday night, but the injuries were not considered life-threatening... A state trooper and an aide to the governor were also injured in the crash... The governor was listed in critical but stable condition Thursday night.

Forbes.com has this report that goes in part like this... Dr. Robert Ostrum, who performed the surgery, said it was successful but noted that the governor would need two more operations on his leg in the coming days. Doctors also inserted a breathing tube that would remain "for days to weeks, until (Corzine) is able to breathe on his own again," Ostrum said... Corzine, who was conscious when he arrived at the hospital, had a broken sternum, a broken collarbone, a slight fracture of his lower vertebrae, a broken left leg, six broken ribs on each side and a laceration on his head, said Dr. Steven Ross, head of trauma for the hospital. He did not sustain any brain or spinal cord damage, doctors said...

[A witness] ... who was on the scene of the accident, said Corzine's legs were hanging out of the window after the accident. He said, "The governor was screaming 'My leg! My leg!'" The governor does not usually wear a seat belt, a law enforcement official [said] ... but it is unknown whether he was wearing one at the time of the crash...
