Thousands Cheered Lebanese Troops Tuesday
As They Withdrew From Battleground
In North Lebanon
Thousands of people cheered Lebanese troops withdrawing Tuesday from a battleground in north Lebanon where the army said it had killed at least 222 extremists during a 15-week standoff... Defence Minister Elias Murr hailed the battles that culminated Sunday at the Naher al-Bared Palestinian refugee camp as a key victory that prevented the Fatah al-Islam group from spreading throughout Lebanon... "This victory allowed us to put an end to the worst threat ever faced by the Lebanese," Murr told a press conference. "Fatah al-Islam could have spread throughout the country like cancerous cells."
