Senate Panel Now Joins House Subcommittee in Authorizing Subpoenas

A Senate panel probing the firing of eight U.S. attorneys joined a House subcommittee in authorizing subpoenas to compel testimony by Karl Rove, President George W. Bush's top political adviser, and other White House officials... The Senate Judiciary Committee today gave its chairman, Democrat Patrick Leahy of Vermont, power to issue the subpoenas -- thwarting a bid by Republicans to delay the move... Republican committee members expressed displeasure with the president's plan to only permit the questioning of White House aides in private without any official transcript. But they urged the panel to seek a compromise before proceeding with subpoenas...
