Iraq's provincial elections have wrapped up without any reports of serious violence

FOXNews.com brings us this GOOD NEWS and it starts off like this...
Polls closed at 6 p.m. (10 a.m. EST) on Saturday - an hour later than planned - after millions of voters cast ballots for influential regional councils around most of Iraq. There were no reports of major violence... Iraqi authorities imposed a huge security operation around the country that included traffic bans in major cities and extensive checkpoints and surveillance posts. The U.S. military also was out in force but did not take a direct role in the election security... Results from the elections are not expected before Tuesday...

Iraq Prepared for Provincial Elections

Iraqis of all backgrounds are preparing to vote during their country’s first election since 2005, a senior Defense Department official said here Thursday.
.
More than 15 million Iraqis are eligible to vote in the Jan. 31 provincial elections, which will select representatives for 440 council seats across the country’s 18 provinces, Pentagon Press Secretary Geoff Morrell told Pentagon reporters.
.
The more than 14,000 candidates “have for the most part, run on issues that matter to the Iraqi people, rather than trying to exploit ethnic or sectarian divisions,” Morrell said.
.
There has been some pre-election violence, but relatively few instances of voter intimidation, Morrell said.
.
Sunnis had boycotted the 2005 Iraqi elections, but indications are they will participate in this year’s provincial-seat polling, Morrell said. This development, he said, should produce a more representative Iraqi government, particularly in traditionally Sunni areas.
.
U.S. and Coalition troops will support Iraqi Security Forces during the election, Morrell said.
.
Morrell also noted that Afghan government officials have announced their country’s next national elections will be held in August, just before the Ramadan observance period. Reports also indicate, he added, that voter registrations in Afghanistan continue to progress well.
.
“So, we are pleased that the relatively new democracies in Afghanistan and Iraq continue to mature rapidly,” Morrell said.

DoD Identifies Army Casualties

The Department of Defense announced today the death of four soldiers who were supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. They died from wounds suffered when two OH-58D Kiowa Warrior Helicopters crashed January 26th in Kirkuk, Iraq. They were assigned to the 6th Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment, 10th Combat Aviation Brigade, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y.

Killed were:
Chief Warrant Officer Philip E. Windorski, Jr., 35, of Bovey, Minn
Chief Warrant Officer Matthew G. Kelley, 30, of Cameron, Mo
Chief Warrant Officer Joshua M. Tillery, 31, of Beaverton, Ore
Chief Warrant Officer Benjamin H. Todd, 29, of Colville, Wash

The incident is under investigation.

DoD Identifies Marine Casualties

The Department of Defense announced today the deaths of two Marines who were supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

The following Marines died Jan. 27 while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan:
Sgt. David W. Wallace III, 25, of Sharpsville, Pa.
Sgt. Trevor J. Johnson, 23, of Forsyth, Mont.

The Marines were assigned to the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Pvt. Grant A. Cotting, 19, of Corona, Calif., died January 24th in Kut, Iraq, of injuries sustained from a non-combat related incident. He was assigned to the 515th Sapper Company, 5th Engineer Battalion, 4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.

Palm prints are taken from the scene of a diffused roadside bomb in Iraq. Later, an individual entering a New York airport is arrested on an unrelated charge. A full set of prints are taken during the booking process and submitted to our Next Generation Identification (NGI) system. A positive ID connects the man to the roadside bomb.
.
A ski mask-wearing bank robber leaves with his loot, and witnesses tell police they noticed a red skull tattoo on his hand. A search of NGI’s Interstate Photo System for a red skull tattoo provides a potential candidate list that could ultimately lead to the identification of the bank robber.
.
Both cases are hypothetical, but in the not-too-distant future these scenarios could really happen…thanks to the ongoing development of the Next Generation Identification system -- a logical evolution of our current Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS).
.
That evolution will include not only enhanced fingerprint capabilities but also other forms of biometric identification like palm prints, iris scans, facial imaging, scars, marks, and tattoos -- in one searchable system.
.
Next Generation Identification is…
.
A state-of-the-art identification system that will be “bigger, faster, and better” than IAFIS, says Assistant Director Tom Bush of our Criminal Justice Information Services Division.
.
“Bigger” because it will increase the capacity of our fingerprint storage plus house multimodal biometrics records like palm prints and iris scans…and still have room to accommodate future biometric technologies (i.e., voice, gait, etc.) as they become available and prove reliable.
.
“Faster” because it will speed up response time for high priority criminal ten-print submissions from two hours to about 10 minutes on average. There will also be a special category called the “Repository of Individuals of Special Concern” containing records of known or suspected terrorists, wanted persons, and sexual offender registry names. These records can be quickly searched to help law enforcement in the U.S. and American soldiers in places like Iraq and Afghanistan assess the level of threat during an encounter.
.
“Better” because going beyond fingerprints as biometric identifiers will enhance the investigative and identification processes. For example, adding palm prints makes sense: some of the latent prints left behind by criminals at crime scenes are palm prints. NGI is also being developed to be compatible with other U.S. biometric systems and potentially with those of some foreign partners.
.
Next Generation Identification is not…
.
A tool to expand the categories of individuals from who the fingerprints and biometric data may be collected, nor will it change existing legal authorities.
.
It doesn’t threaten individual privacy. As required with any federal system, the FBI is doing Privacy Impact Assessments on what information will be collected, how it will be shared, how it will be accessed, and how the data will be securely stored…all in an effort to protect privacy.
.
NGI is not strictly an FBI system. It’s a joint effort and is being developed in full collaboration with its primary users—our local, state, and federal partners…in particular the CJIS Advisory Policy Board and the National Crime Prevention Compact Council.
.
Over the next few years, we’ll be rolling out NGI capabilities incrementally so our partners will have the benefit of each capability as soon as it gets our stamp of approval.

Sgt. Kyle J. Harrington, 24, of Swansea, Mass., died January 24th in Basra, Iraq, of injuries sustained from a non-hostile accident in his unit motor pool. He was assigned to the 542nd Maintenance Company, 80th Ordnance Battalion, 593rd Sustainment Brigade, Fort Lewis, Wash. The incident is under investigation.

The National Grid is piloting a new energy creation technology that harnesses the energy stored in high pressure gas pipes... Natural gas has extremely high pressure when it is sourced from underground... This pressure has to be reduced eight times before the gas is suitable for use in homes - a process that wastes huge amounts of latent energy... . In his first weekly address since being sworn in as the 44th president of the United States, President Barack Obama discusses how the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan will jump-start the economy.

"This is not just a short-term program to boost employment," he said. "It’s one that will invest in our most important priorities like energy and education; health care and a new infrastructure that are necessary to keep us strong and competitive in the 21st century."

The Administration is still working with Congress to refine the plan, but in the address, President Obama lays out the key priorities. He goes into detail, noting that the plan will update our electric grid by laying more than 3,000 miles of transmission lines; weatherize 2.5 million homes; protect health insurance for more than 8 million Americans in danger of losing their coverage; secure 90 major ports; renovate 10,000 schools; and triple the number of science fellowships.

At least 20 people were killed in northwest Pakistan near the border of Afghanistan on Friday in two suspected U.S. missile strikes, marking the first such attack in Pakistan's tribal areas since President Obama's inauguration... A U.S. Predator drone fired three missiles at a compound about two miles from the town of Mirali in the tribal area of North Waziristan about 5:15 p.m., according to a Pakistani security official and local residents. The precision strike leveled a compound, which was owned by local tribal elder Khalil Malik, killing at least 10 suspected militants, including five foreign nationals, according to the Pakistani security official. The site of the attack is about 30 miles east of the Afghan border... The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter, said Malik was killed along with his brother and nephew... Authorities in North Waziristan, however, said they have been so far unable to identify any of those killed because militants immediately cordoned off the area. "I suspect a high-value target may be among the dead," the Pakistani security official said...

Possible Sighting of FBI Fugitive in British Columbia

Possible Sighting of FBI Fugitive in British Columbia

The FBI is working with Canadian authorities to confirm the possible sighting of one of its Domestic Terrorism fugitives.
.
Last November, the Bureau announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of four eco-terrorists known as “The Family.”
.
Rebecca Rubin, one of the four fugitives, was spotted by a tipster who may have seen her near her hometown of Vancouver, British Columbia.
.
We received several tips about all of the fugitives as a result of the publicity.
.
Some of the information was pretty specific about Rebecca Rubin
The FBI is working through its agents assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa as well as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to follow up on this information.
Rubin and three other fugitives, Joseph Dibee, Josephine Overaker, and Justin Solondz, are all believed to be living abroad.
.
It has been 10 years since the group torched a ski resort in Vail, Colorado, causing $26 million in damage and drawing international attention to eco-terrorists—those who break the law in the name of the environment and animal rights.
.
Here are the charges against the four:
.
Dibee was indicted in 2006 on charges of arson, conspiracy, and animal enterprise terrorism. He is believed to be living in Syria with family members.
.
Overaker has been on the run since 2001. She was indicted in 2004, with subsequent indictments in 2006, including for her involvement with the 1998 Vail arson. She is believed to have spent time in Germany and may have settled in Spain. She speaks fluent Spanish.
.
Rubin was indicted in 2006 for the Vail arson and other domestic terrorism crimes. A Canadian citizen, she has strong family ties to Canada and may be living there.
.
Solondz was also indicted in 2006 on charges that include arson, conspiracy, and animal enterprise terrorism. He was out of the country when he was indicted and has never returned. Solondz has traveled in Russia, China, and India.
.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of any fugitive should contact their nearest law enforcement agency, FBI Field Office, or U.S. Embassy.

The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
Spc. Ezra Dawson, 31, of Las Vegas, Nev., died January 17th in Konar Province, Afghanistan when the Chinook helicopter he was in made a hard landing under combat conditions. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.

Missing WWII Soldiers are Identified

The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) announced today that the remains of two U.S. servicemen, missing from World War II, have been identified and will be returned to their families for burial with full military honors.

They are:
Pfc. Julian H. Rogers, of Bloomington, Ind
Pvt. Henry E. Marquez, of Kansas City, Kan

Both men were U.S. Army. Rogers will be buried in the spring in Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, D.C., and Marquez will be buried on May 30 in Kansas City, Mo.

Representatives from the Army's Mortuary Office met with the next-of-kin of these men in their hometowns to explain the recovery and identification process and to coordinate interment with military honors on behalf of the Secretary of the Army.

In November 1944, the 112th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division, was attacking east through the Hürtgen Forest in an attempt to capture the German towns of Vossenack and Schmidt. On Nov. 4, the Germans counterattacked in what would become one of the longest running battles in U.S. history. Rogers and Marquez, both members of G Company, 112th Infantry Regiment, were reported killed in action near Vossenack on Nov. 4. Their bodies were not recovered.

In 2007, a German citizen searching for wartime relics in the Hürtgen Forest uncovered human remains and military identification tags for Rogers and Marquez. He notified U.S. officials and a Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) team excavated the site later that year. The team recovered human remains and non-biological material.

Among dental records, other forensic identification tools and circumstantial evidence, scientists from JPAC and the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory also used mitochondrial DNA in the identification of the remains.

* Newsweek.com brings us this report this Thursday morning and it starts off like this... President Barack Obama began overhauling U.S. treatment of terror suspects Thursday, signing orders to close the Guantanamo Bay detention center, review military war crimes trials and ban the harshest interrogation methods... "We intend to win this fight. We're going to win it on our terms," Obama said as he signed three executive orders and a presidential directive in the Oval Office. Obama explained each order before he put his pen to them, in some cases reading them in full, and occasionally solicited input from White House counsel Greg Craig to make sure he was describing them correctly...

Much of its heavy armour remains massed on the border and Israel says it may send them back in again if Hamas resumes its rocket fire... Soldiers have told Sky News Online they have been kept on combat readiness for 30 days. That order extends even to troops' communications with families... "We are not allowed to see our wives or girlfriends," said one infantryman. "We can only phone them so we stay focused."... Israel announced its unilateral ceasefire on Saturday night and Hamas followed suit the next day... Hamas issued Israel with demands to withdraw troops in a week and open Gaza's border crossings... But Israel says any agreement to reopen crossings is a long way off and conditional on Hamas releasing abducted Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit...

DoD Identifies Army Casualty

The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Pfc. Ricky L. Turner, 20, of Athens, Ala., died January 16th in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his unit. He was assigned to the 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.

As I take the sacred oath of the highest office in the land, I am humbled by the responsibility placed upon my shoulders, renewed by the courage and decency of the American people, and fortified by my faith in an awesome God.

We are in the midst of a season of trial. Our Nation is being tested, and our people know great uncertainty. Yet the story of America is one of renewal in the face of adversity, reconciliation in a time of discord, and we know that there is a purpose for everything under heaven.

President Bush Commutes Sentences for Two Former Border Patrol Agents

FoxNews.com brings us this bit of GOOD news this Monday and it goes like this...
On his last full day in office, President Bush commuted the controversial sentences of two former Border Patrol agents convicted of shooting a Mexican drug runner in 2005... The imprisonment of Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean had sparked outcry from critics who said the men were just doing their jobs and were punished too harshly. They had been sentenced to 11- and 12-year sentences, respectively... Their sentences will now expire on March 20 of this year...
