Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Avigdor Lieberman sent a letter to the newly appointed UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon’s over a statement he had made during a recent interview when he said resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is the key to peace throughout the Middle East.

Lieberman wrote in part... “I have never heard Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad call for territorial compromises from Israel, but rather for the total and unconditional annihilation of the Jewish State... I have never heard Mahmoud Ahmadinejad call for negotiations between Israel and Palestinians, yet I have heard his repeated calls for wiping Israel off the map. Ahmadinejad’s vision for a ‘new Middle East’ is one devoid of a Jewish State or any Jews at all.”

Israel will Test Underground Installation to Monitor Iran's Nuclear Activity
Israel will test an underground installation in the Negev desert today... designed to monitor any attempt by Iran to test nuclear devices... The test will consist of three strong explosions Israel will deliberately set off in the northern Negev using 15 tons of liquid explosives, to see how they register on equipment at the underground site.

DoD Identifies Army Casualties

The Department of Defense announced today the death of two soldiers who were supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. They died December 29th in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle during combat operations.
Killed were:
Sgt. Lawrence J. Carter, 25, of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Schweinfurt, Germany.
Pfc. William R. Newgard, 20, of Arlington Heights, Ill. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Schweinfurt, Germany.

Finally... the United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan is no longer in charge of the UN. As of January 1st 2006, Ban Ki-moon has officially taken over as the eighth United Nations Secretary-General.

Like most of you... I too pray that Secretary-General Ki-moon makes many new and well needed changes in policy and personal... that will help get the UN once again back into being a great institution and away from being a ‘Corrupt Debating Society’.

Passing an honor guard and welcomed with applause from staff, new United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon arrived at the world body’s New York Headquarters today for his first official day of work.

Mr. Ban, who succeeded Kofi Annan to become the UN’s eighth Secretary-General as the New Year came in on 1 January, smiled broadly as he entered the towering landmark building on New York’s East River.
.
After paying tribute at the memorial for UN personnel who have fallen in the line of duty, he was to address staff on his hopes and aspirations.

Six Terrorists Killed In Fierce Firefight During Baghdad Raid
Coalition Forces killed six terrorists and detained one suspected terrorist during a fierce firefight Monday morning in Baghdad.
Intelligence reports indicated the targeted location was used as a possible safe house for al-Qaida in Iraq terrorists to conduct operational planning.
While approaching the targeted area, Coalition Forces received heavy automatic weapons fire and hand grenades from the top of several nearby buildings. Coalition Forces returned fire killing two terrorists. Several armed men fled to a third building.
Coalition Forces received fire from the top of the third building and they returned fire. Coalition Forces were able to establish a foothold in one of the adjacent buildings.
Due to the heavy amount of enemy fire received two buildings caught on fire.
While receiving heavy automatic weapons fire from many directions, Coalition Forces managed to kill four more terrorists and detain one.
One of the buildings from which Coalition Forces received heavy enemy fire, including grenade launches, was later identified as belonging to Dr. Salih al-Mutlaq al-Dulaymi, the Chairman for the Iraqi National Dialogue Council.
Coalition Forces continue to dismantle the al-Qaida in Iraq terrorist network inside Iraq. The events that occurred during this raid demonstrate Coalition Forces’ determination to continue the degradation of the terrorist network.
