That's how one refugee- coming out of the bowels of New Orleans puts it… About PHOTO.........
Dania Beach, Fla. August 28, 2005 -- Hurricane Winds from Katrina knocked over huge tree crushing this home. Joann & Orland Douglas point to where they were when the tree fell on them. Orland was knocked down by the tree and Joann was trapped under the rubble and had to be rescued. Many Mobile homes and homes are damaged and residents are displaced.

** To those who have the clout to pass this on…
Tell someone in the government to get the bullhorns out- drop leaflets if they must, broadcast on every radio station that they can as to where all these people need to go and what to do to get help… Most of them seem to not have the faintest idea as what to do to help save their on lives-- They so desperately need someone to tell them what to do… It’s almost like that movie I saw on Yellowstone having a mass Volcano eruption and the aftermath of the disaster that followed… FEMA- in this movie- sent out the word called- “WALK FOR LIFE.” They told the survivors where to go for help… Anyway- Like in this movie- with all this mess in New Orleans-- We can’t go and get every single one of these people on an individual basis… Many will die before that ever happens............
They got to come out to us… Get with it FEMA!!!!

Hurricane KATRINA- Update Monday

6:30am Eastern Time: Katrina is a Cat 4 Hurricane with sustained winds of 150mph and has just made LANDFALL just east of Grand Isle, Louisiana, (South of New Orleans.) Power out at Superdome- backup generators might be working but I’m not sure at this moment. Be another hour or two before the worse hits New Orleans. Hopefully not as bad as once was thought… We will know soon and now’s a good time to pray for these people in harms way.

Note: Cross your fingers for the Oil Refineries on the Gulf- Next few hours are going to be critical as to what kind of damage these Refineries receive and for what kind of prices we will have to pay at the gas pumps in the months to come…
>> Power out at Superdome- backup generators are working but I believe AC is not.
>> 9:45am Eastern Time: Big leaks in roof of Superdome have been reported. Structure seems to be in good shape though. Some reports of major house flooding in parts of New Orleans along with lots of structural damage. Wind gust of 130mph and better likely in parts of New Orleans right now. Pumps Failing and that’s surely not going to help out flooding problems. Electricity is out in many parts of town.
>> 11:00am ET- info from NOAA: Katrina is now a Cat 3 Hurricane with sustained winds of 125mph. A TORNADO WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR MUCH OF SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA AND COASTAL MISSISSIPPI DUE TO THE THREAT OF TORNADOES. RAINFALL TOTALS OF 8 TO 10 INCHES- WITH ISOLATED MAXIMUM AMOUNTS OF 15 INCHES.- ARE POSSIBLE…
>> 12:30am ET- Still Cat 3 storm with 125mph winds… Lets not forget Mississippi- Alabama and Florida… What can one say… Floods- high winds- Tornados still ongoing. I think I’ll wait until I can get some good pictures and on ground reports of damage and such before reporting much more on these places.
>> 1:15pm ET- Katrina is now a Cat 2 Hurricane with sustained winds of 105mph.
I just wanted to say that prayers do get answered. Watching the satellite loop a few minutes ago, I saw something that truly amazed me. (You can make note to look at the next satellite view you see of this Hurricane coming on shore.) As the Eye Wall hit land for the first time in Louisiana, it jumped to the east, (right) then came back on its normal track. That is until it made its 2nd landfall and I’ll be danged if it didn’t do it again. Now I could be wrong on this- but both times this storm took that major jog to the right, (east) was during crucial times for the eye to dodge New Orleans… That’s why I say- Prayers Do Sometimes Get Answered!!! Check it out and tell me what you think…

>> Hurricane Response Demonstrates Guard's State, Federal Capabilities
By Donna Miles
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, Aug. 29, 2005

The National Guard's solid response to Hurricane Katrina demonstrates that the Guard is still fully capable of responding to stateside emergencies while supporting the war in terror overseas, the chief of the National Guard Bureau told the American Forces Press Service today.

Army Lt. Gen. H. Steven Blum described the thousands of Army and Air National Guard troops called to active duty in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida and other states to support hurricane operations as a testament to the Guard's ability to carry out its federal and state missions simultaneously.

Guard members along the Gulf Coast are performing a variety of missions, from providing security at the emergency shelter at the New Orleans Superdome, where thousands of local residents are seeing refuge from Hurricane Katrina, to assisting with emergency evacuations.

As the storm's fury begins to wane, the Guard will begin providing a wide range of other support: helping law enforcement agencies with security and traffic control; transporting and distributing food, water and ice; conducting searches and rescues; providing generator support; and carrying out other missions to support live and property.

Meanwhile, as they support one of the largest hurricanes on record to hit the United States, Guard units are fighting wildfires in the Northwest and guarding critical infrastructure nationwide against terrorists, Blum noted.

And at the same time, an estimated 75,000 National Guard members are deployed to some 40 countries around the world, including Iraq, where they make up almost one-half the U. S. force, he said.

"All of this is happening at the same time, yet we are not putting the overseas mission at risk, nor are we putting the homeland defense mission at risk," the general said. "We are able to do what the nation needs us to do, and whenever we are needed, we are there, with the right skills and the right equipment and the right personnel. "

Blum called this capability "a huge success story for the Army and Air National Guard" that provides "probably the best demonstration yet" that the Guard can continue to respond to stateside crises while supporting a federal, overseas mission.

Under a plan he instituted when taking over the National Guard Bureau's reins, Blum initiated a policy to ensure every state has at least 50 percent of its Guard assets available to support state missions.

As of today, Louisiana has 65 percent of its troops available for state missions; Mississippi, 60 percent; Alabama, 77 percent; and Florida, 74 percent, Guard officials said.

The National Guard's presence in states being battered by Hurricane Katrina provides reassurance to the American public, which recognizes the security, medical, communications, logistics and law-and-order support Guard members provide local, state and federal first responders, the general said.

"It's a calming and reassuring effect on the American public when they see their National Guard," Blum said. "When you call out the Guard, you know that you've got committed citizen-soldiers with considerable skills and a great commitment to the mission at hand. "

At the same time, Guard members "have great compassion because they come from the people they are supporting," the general said. "So when you call out the Guard, you basically call out America. "

The National Guard is braced to continue that support for the long term until the affected regions get back on their feet, he said.

"We learned from hurricanes in Florida that recovery takes weeks and months, and not days," Blum said. "So we are looking at this recovery operation with the long haul in mind, and we are setting ourselves up to have an extended, protracted response, as necessary, until normalcy is restored to these communities. "
>> 6:00pm ET- Katrina is now a Cat 1 Hurricane with sustained winds of 75mph with gust up to 90mph.
>> I’m going to wait on doing anymore post until I see some of the Damage Reports of all 5 States that got hit by this massive storm today, Monday- 8/29/05. My next post on Hurricane Katrina shouldn’t be any later than noon tomorrow. It’s going to be worse than many think I’m afraid…
God bless the ones who lost their lives to this storm and my condolences to their family members… As of 9:30pm ET- Katrina was a Tropical Storm yet she still had winds near Hurricane strength…. Tornados- high winds and heavy rain-- going to still be a long night for many……

In captured Iraqi Terrorist Ramzi Hashem Abed's on words-

Captured Iraqi Terrorist Ramzi Hashem Abed: Zarqawi Participated in the Plot to Assassinate Baqer Al-Hakim. We Bombed Jalal Talabani's Headquarters, the Turkish Embassy, and the Red Cross, Took Drugs, Raped University Students Who "Collaborated with the Americans"

The following are excerpts from the investigation of Ramzi Hashem Abed, a captured Iraqi terrorist, which aired on Al-Fayhaa TV on August 12, and Al-Iraqiya TV on August 7, 2005.

Al-Fayhaa TV
Investigator: What is your full name?
Abed: Ramzi Hashem Abed.
Investigator: What is your alias?
Abed: 'Ubeidi.
Investigator: Where do you live?
Abed: Nabi Yunis in Mosul.
Investigator: What organization do you belong to?
Abed: Ansar Al-Islam.
Investigator: What organization is this?
Abed: It is Bin-Laden's group.
[...]
Abed: Mullah Al-Shafi'i said that we were going to carry out operations in Najaf.
Investigator: What kind of operations?
Abed: The Al-Qabanji operation, for example, or sending them poisoned food on the day commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussein.
[...]
Investigator: Give me an example of an operation.
Abed: The Turkish embassy, for example.
Investigator: The Turkish embassy in Baghdad?
Abed: Yes, or the Red Cross. We bombed it. The guys and I bombed it.
Investigator: What was the goal of bombing the Turkish embassy or the Red Cross?
Abed: In bombing the Turkish embassy we wanted to cause a problem between the Turkmens and the Kurds.
Investigator: In other words, to cause civil strife between the two sides?
Abed: Yes.
Investigator: As for the murder of Muhammad Baqer Al-Hakim, you were one of the perpetrators, right?
Abed: Yes.
Investigator: Tell me how it took place.
Abed: The operation... It was agreed upon right from the start by Mullah Al-Raikan, Mullah Al-Shafi'i, and Al-Zarqawi. They took us Iraqis to do surveillance from a distance. There were people there who specialized in bombing operations. They are still in Baghdad and Mosul.
Investigator: How many were you?
Abed: About four or five people.
Investigator: Those who carried out the operation?
Abed: Yes.
Investigator: They sent an ambulance and used remote control.
Abed: Yes.
Investigator: Where were you exactly at the time of the incident?
Abed: We were in the cemetery.
Investigator: Why weren't you close to the incident?
Abed: Because there were specialists who carried out the operation.
Investigator: Specialists? Who were they?
Abed: Abu Sajjad, Abu Haidar, and Abu Hamza.
Investigator: All these are aliases. What are their real names?
Abed: They never give out their real names.
Investigator: You don't even know their real names?
Abed: No. For example, my name is Ramzi, right? They call me Abu Shema', after my daughter.
Investigator: OK. What was your role in this operation?
Abed: They brought us to monitor the security forces' movements.
Investigator: How did the vehicle enter?
Abed: It came in through Sweiliej.
Investigator: I mean the city itself, how did it enter Najaf?
Abed: It was easy for an ambulance to enter.
[...]
Abed: They gave Abu Sajjad 4,000 dollars.
Investigator: And you?
Abed: They gave us 400 dollars.
Investigator: A religious leader gave you 400 dollars? OK. Did the operation target Muhammad Baqer Al-Hakim specifically or the Al-Imam Ali mosque?
Abed: No... The people in charge, Mullah Al-Raikan and Al-Zarqawi, targeted Al-Hakim specifically.
Investigator: Why in this specific place? Why would they try to target Muhammad Baqer Al-Hakim near the Al-Imam Ali mosque? It is the mosque of the Emir of believers. Didn't you think of all the innocent people around?
Abed: There were also people from Iraqi military intelligence, from the Fidayin, and the internal security, who were also involved in this operation.
Investigator: So Mullah Raikan had ties with the old internal security and military intelligence?
Abed: And they are still in Mosul.
Investigator: What other operations?
Abed: Operations we carried out in Mosul.
Investigator: Like what?
Abed: Against headquarters in Mosul. The headquarters of Mas'oud...
Investigator: Mas'oud Rajab?
Abed: Yes. Against Jalal Talabani. We attacked them on the first day of Ramadan 2003.
Investigator: What squad did you tell me you belong to? Abu Sajjad's?
Abed: Yes.
Investigator: The groups you mentioned... Each group had a special mission?
Abed: Each group had suicide bombers, who are Afghans, not Iraqis.
[...]
Investigator: There were murders of police and National Guard officers.
Abed: Yes.
Investigator: Slaughtering National Guardsmen and policemen - tell me about it.
Abed: Sir, the slaughtering was done by people who belonged to the Syrians.
Investigator: Syrians?
Abed: Yes, the slaughtering...
Investigator: From your own group?
Abed: No. There was a squad that came from the Syrian border.
[...]
Abed: We carried out an operation in Mosul. We attacked the Islamic movement.
Investigator: The Islamic movement party?
Abed: Yes. This was in Mosul. We also hit the Al-Hisk headquarters.
Investigator: What is Al-Hisk?
Abed: It is the Kurdish neighborhood. We hit them, and we also hit the Communist headquarters, in Mosul.
Investigator: The Communist party in Al-Mosul?
Abed: Yes.
Investigator: Why did you mainly target Kurds?
Abed: Because in 2000-2003, Jalal Al-Talabani brought the Americans to attack us.
Investigator: You mean that this was just revenge, or did you want to cause strife between Arabs and Kurds?
Abed: No, it was revenge.
[...]
Investigator: Did you kidnap women?
Abed: Yes.
Investigator: There were operations of kidnapping and rape, carried out by the squad you belong to?
Abed: Yes.
Investigator: Tell me how many rape and kidnapping operations were carried out. My information says that the kidnapped women were university students or daughters of famous people. You raped them and got money for it, and if they were not slaughtered afterwards.... Did this really happen?
Abed: Yes, it did.
Investigator: Who would carry out these operations?
Abed: Abu Sajjad.
Investigator: Your superior?
Abed: Yes.
[...]
Investigator: Is this Jihad - raping women? Is this Jihad?
Abed: It is because they collaborated with the Americans.
Investigator: That's why they were raped?
Abed: Yes.
Investigator: A student, who is simply going to her university, is kidnapped, raped, and then slaughtered?! This was an American collaborator?!
Abed: Mullah Al-Raikan would give the names to the squad commander.
Investigator: My information says that they were kidnapped and brought to Mullah Al-Raikan's headquarters. True or false?
Abed: He would interrogate them.
Investigator: Were they raped after the interrogation?
Abed: Yes. He would give them to the squad, and they would kill them. Some would rape them.
Investigator: You bastards. This is Jihad? You call this Jihad?
Investigator 2: What was your role in these operations?
Abed: I would stand at the entrance to the headquarters. It was a house, and they would bring them there.
Investigator 2: Did you participate in the rape and murder?
Abed: No. Just one who worked for the PUK. She was a Kurd.
Investigator: In the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan?
Abed: Yes. We brought her too.
Investigator: And you raped her?
Abed: Yes.
[...]
Abed: Our Ansar Al-Islam military camps were in Halabja.
Investigator: This was in the days of the previous regime?
Abed: Yes.
Investigator: And now?
Abed: Now, there is nothing. They were all scattered. The training area was in Falluja.
Investigator: And then?
Abed: After Falluja was hit, they would come through Syria to Mosul... I mean, through Falluja to Mosul.
[...]
Abed: I want to say one thing. Lieutenant Muhammad respected me and gave me food. I never thought it would be like this. He gave me food, and we had lunch together, and the honorable lieutenant-colonel gave me some Pepsi. I never believed Shiites could show such respect and care. We were taught by people like Mullah Al-Raikan that Shi'a is not Islam.
Investigator: You mean we show you respect and you slaughter us?
Abed: Yes. Mullah Al-Raikan thinks so, and he said so more than once.
Investigator: That's what they think.
Abed: Yes, that Shiites are not Muslims, that they worship the Imam Ali and do not accept Muhammad.
[...]

Al-Iraqiya TV
Investigator: Did you rape anyone?
Abed: Only one, a relative of mine.
Investigator: A relative of yours. You kidnapped her and raped her?
Abed: No, we did not kill her.
Investigator: You didn't kill her, only raped her?
Abed: Yes.
Investigator: You have some nerve...
[...]
Abed: I want to say one thing. Before the operation they would give us pills.
Investigator: Capsules?
Abed: Not capsules. They would give us something like hashish and opium, and tell us we would not feel the operation we were carrying out.
Investigator: Drugs?
Abed: Yes......

Historic visit will be made by Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh this Sunday and Monday, (August 28 - 29,) to Afghanistan-

This upcoming two day visit is largely symbolic and no major agreements are expected to be signed between the two countries said Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran during a News Briefing. But, he added, that the trip would signal India’s strong commitment to help rebuild the war-torn nation.

Even though India and Afghanistan have shared close historic and cultural links, the turmoil in Afghanistan had not allowed an Indian prime minister to visit Kabul since a trip in 1976 by Indira Gandhi. Good read today on this and more at: newKerala.com

Strategy To Win The War On Terror

President Bush Has Outlined A Comprehensive Strategy To Win The War On Terror

Protecting The Homeland.
The Administration has reformed our intelligence services, trained more than 800,000 first responders, and disrupted terrorist cells in our midst through new tools like the USA Patriot Act. We are hunting down the terrorists in the shadows before they can attack our country again.

Fighting The Terrorists Abroad Before They Can Attack Us Here At Home.
September 11th taught us that retreating within our borders will not keep us safe while the terrorists plot and plan. That is why American men and women in uniform are taking the fight to the terrorists in Afghanistan, Iraq, the Horn of Africa, and elsewhere. The only way to defend our citizens where we live is to go after the terrorists where they plot and plan.

Advancing Freedom To Ensure American Security.
In the long run, the best way to defeat the terrorists is by offering an alternative to their ideology of hatred and fear. By advancing the cause of liberty in the Middle East, we are bringing hope to millions, security to our citizens - and laying the foundation of peace for our children and grandchildren. As people in the Middle East and across the world advance peace and gain freedom, America will be more secure.

Retreat And Isolation Will Not Make America Safe; We Must Complete The Mission In Iraq

September 11, 2001, Gave Us A Choice Between Waiting To Be Attacked Again And Going On The Offense.
During the last few decades, the terrorists grew to believe that if they attack America - as in Lebanon and Somalia - America would retreat and back down. They are trying to break America's will with acts of brutality and violence. Their goal is to force a retreat, so they can topple governments in the Middle East and turn that region into a safe haven for terrorism and tyranny. We saw the terrible harm that terrorists did when they took effective control of a failed state in Afghanistan, which led directly to the attacks of September 11th.

America Will Not Wait To Be Attacked Again.
America will confront emerging threats before they fully materialize. We will not allow the terrorists to establish new places of refuge in failed states, from which they can recruit and train and plan new attacks on our citizens. Nations that harbor a terrorist are just as guilty as the terrorists.

We Must Complete The Mission In Iraq.
A withdrawal of our troops in Iraq or the broader Middle East before the mission is complete - as some have called for - would only embolden the terrorists and create a staging ground to launch more attacks against America and other free people.

The Iraqi People Are Making Progress.
Iraqis braved threats and violence and defied the terrorists to make their voices heard in elections, and today they are working to write their own constitution. Producing a constitution is a difficult process that involves debate and compromise. Americans know this from our own history, and that is why we admire their thoughtful deliberations and determination to lay the foundation for a lasting democracy.

Members Of The National Guard And Reserve Understand That The Rise Of Liberty Is Critical To Our National Security.
Guard and Reserves members understand the power of freedom because they have witnessed it with their own eyes. They have seen up close the desire for liberty, as Iraqis made their voices heard in elections and as they move toward their own secure democracy.

America Will Prevail Through The Challenges We Face In Iraq.
Since the morning of September 11th, we have known that the War on Terror would require great sacrifice. In this war, 491 heroes of our National Guard and Reserves have given their lives for a cause that is just and necessary for the security of our country - and now we will honor their sacrifice by completing their mission. We will prevail in this struggle because freedom is the permanent hope of mankind - and because we have on our side the greatest force for freedom in the history of the world: the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces.

Britain to command Nato’s allied rapid reaction force next year in Afghanistan - Zarqawi Heading to Africa???

Britain will be under heavy pressure to cut back its forces in southern Iraq, now numbering about 9,000, before it takes over control of Nato forces in Afghanistan in April next year. Britain will command Nato's allied rapid reaction force, to be based in southern Afghanistan. Nato will later set up another headquarters to the east of the country.

More Troops Deploy for 120 days to support security efforts during the election period in Iraq

No. 876-05 Aug 24, 2005
IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Two Infantry Battalions to Deploy to Iraq for Election Period
On August 23, 2005, the Secretary of Defense approved a request by the commander of Multi-National Forces-Iraq (MNF-I) to deploy two additional infantry battalions to Iraq.
Two battalions from the 82nd Airborne Division will deploy to Iraq for an anticipated duration of approximately 120 days to support security efforts during the election period. Adjustments to troop levels in Iraq occurred prior to the transfer to Iraqi sovereignty in June 2004 and during the January Iraqi elections.

These troops will join 180,000 Iraqi security forces and 138,000 coalition forces in helping set the security conditions for successful elections.

Gen. Casey's request for this additional capability was made in close consultation with, and with the support of, the Iraqi government. This approved request temporarily adds an additional 1,500 active duty soldiers to the troop level in Iraq.

This decision follows a decision in July 2005 to deploy a battalion to Afghanistan in support of security efforts during the upcoming September elections.

Commanders continue to assess security conditions, and additional adjustments to troop levels for the elections are possible.

Two More Battalions to Boost Security During Iraq Elections
By Donna MilesAmerican Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, Aug. 24, 2005

Two infantry battalions from the 82nd Airborne Division will deploy from Fort Bragg, N. C., to Iraq to support security efforts during the upcoming election period, defense officials announced today.

Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld approved the request from Army Gen. George Casey, commander of Multinational Force Iraq. Officials said the request was made in close consultation with and the support of the Iraqi government.

The 1,500 All-American Division troops will deploy within the next several weeks and will be in Iraq for an estimated 120 days, officials said. There, they will join the 180,000 Iraqi security forces and 138,000 coalition forces in helping set the security conditions needed for successful elections.

Army Lt. Col. Barry Venable, a Pentagon spokesman, said the added troops will help guard against any efforts on the part of insurgents to disrupt the elections, allowing the political process to continue moving forward.

"Political progress in Iraq is on track, and this deployment is in support of continued progress," he said. "We are reinforcing success."

DoD approved similar troop-level adjustments before the transfer of Iraqi sovereignty in June 2004 and before two successful national elections, one in Afghanistan last fall and one in Iraq in January.

In addition, defense officials announced plans in July to deploy an additional battalion to Afghanistan to support security efforts during September elections.

"We've done it before, it worked well, and we're doing it again," Venable said of actions to come about with today's announcement.

Commanders on the ground will continue to assess security conditions and adjustments troop levels as needed to support the elections, officials said.

Venable emphasized that the troop increase for the election period is temporary and is not directly related to the long-term U. S. presence in Iraq.

Decisions about force reductions and redeployments will be based on conditions, not an artificial timetable, he said, with U. S. troops remaining in Iraq in the numbers needed through the political transitions and until Iraq is capable of providing for its own security.

Giving them Hell- More Coalition and Iraqi forces success in Iraq

Coalition Forces Meet With Successes, Capture Insurgents, Weapons
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, Aug. 24, 2005

Coalition forces in Iraq met with several successes Aug. 23, capturing a known al Qaeda member, several suspected terrorists and weapons, and destroying a terrorist hideout, according to U. S. military officials in Baghdad.

Acting on tips from local Iraqis, coalition forces raided a hideout near Asad and confirmed terrorists were using the location to facilitate operations.

No details were available on the capture of the al Qaeda member. But after coalition forces captured the individual, he told officials about related terrorist activity in the area, which led to the capture of two suspected terrorists. Coalition forces near Asad also captured and destroyed a car bomb and two weapons caches consisting of mortars, rockets and rocket-propelled grenades.

In other news, Iraqi army soldiers captured 15 insurgents in two operations Aug. 23. Iraqi soldiers with the 4th Battalion, 2nd Brigade, 4th Iraqi Army Division, captured five insurgents believed to be involved in improvised-explosive-device attacks in Dujayl. In nearby Tikrit and Balad, combined operations led to the capture of 10 insurgents suspected of mounting indirect-fire attacks and other attacks against Iraqi security forces.

Elsewhere, Iraqi army soldiers and coalition forces conducting a joint dismounted search of residences in the Hit area Aug. 23 captured suspected five insurgents and improvised explosive device-making materials and equipment.

Iraqi soldiers with 2nd Battalion, 1st Brigade, 1st Iraqi Intervention Force, joined U. S. Marines from 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines, 4th Marine Division, to search an area on the east side of the Euphrates River that earlier was the site of an engagement with insurgents.

In a building from which previous small-arms fire originated, the troops detained five men and found anti-coalition propaganda, cell phones, photos of men carrying weapons, infantry gear, and materials commonly used to make IEDs, including washing machine timers, motorcycle batteries, and wires.

The five detainees tested positive for gunpowder residue and were escorted to Camp Hit for processing and questioning, officials said.

Iraqi security forces and multinational forces from Task Force Freedom detained 27 suspected terrorists in northern Iraq Aug. 23 and today.

Iraqi army soldiers from 3rd Battalion, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, detained three individuals at a checkpoint in Makuk today.

U. S. soldiers from 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, detained four individuals suspected of terrorist activity during a raid in southern Mosul today.

Soldiers from 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, detained an individual suspected of terrorist activity in northern Mosul.

Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, detained an individual suspected of terrorist activity in central Mosul today. Weapons were confiscated for future destruction.
Soldiers from 2nd Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment detained two individuals suspected of terrorist activity in Rawah today.

U. S. soldiers from 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, detained 12 individuals suspected of terrorist activity in southern and eastern Mosul Aug. 23 and today.

Soldiers from the same unit also wounded three suspected terrorists and seized a weapon from their vehicle while responding to small-arms fire in Mosul Aug. 23. The wounded suspected terrorists were transported to a combat support hospital, and one uninjured suspected terrorist was detained. "The toll on terror continues to climb as (Iraqi security forces) and (multinational forces) show resolve in tracking down terrorists responsible for attacks against innocent Iraqi citizens," officials from Task Force Freedom said in a release.

In other action, terrorists detonated three car bombs in central Baghdad starting at 3:15 p. m. today, killing and wounding several Iraqi police and civilians. Task Force Baghdad soldiers came under small-arms fire when they tried to help the Iraqi police with security operations after the first explosion. No U. S. deaths or injuries were reported in the three attacks.

In other Iraq news, coalition forces turned over Camp Zulu, in Suwayrah, to the Iraqi army Aug. 21, officials reported today.

This is the first coalition forces camp within the Multinational Division Central South area of responsibility to be turned over to the Iraqi army's 8th Division. The division's 3rd Battalion, 3rd Brigade, will be permanently housed in the camp, which is located about 35 miles southeast of Baghdad.

In the air war over Iraq, coalition aircraft flew more than 50 close-air-support and armed-reconnaissance sorties Aug. 23 in support of coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities, and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities, according to U. S. Central Command Air Forces Forward Public Affairs officials.

Coalition aircraft also supported Iraqi and coalition ground operations in creating a secure environment for ongoing Transitional National Assembly meetings.

U. S. Navy F/A-18 Hornets and a U. S. Air Force RQ-1 Predator aircraft provided close air support to coalition troops in the vicinities of Ramadi and Tuz Khurmatu, which is about 110 miles north of Baghdad. Ramadi is about 70 miles west of Baghdad on the Euphrates River.

The Predator aircraft's capabilities include providing intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance information to battlefield commanders.

Ten Air Force and Navy intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq. U. S. Air Force and British Royal Air Force fighter aircraft also performed in a non-traditional role with their electro-optical and infrared sensors.
(Compiled from news releases provided by Multinational Force Iraq, Task Force Baghdad, Task Force Freedom, Multinational Security Transition Command Iraq, and U. S. Central Command Air Forces.)

Remembering our fallen in Afghanistan

The major news people do not spend enough time reporting our efforts in Afghanistan. In the future, I’ll try to bring more news from over there… (We have a lot going on yet no one is reporting about it…)
These last few days have not been good ones for our fighting men over in Afghanistan. This whole year hasn’t been as far as that goes. With this said I’ll ask all of you to stop a moment and remember our fallen from this War on Terror… But maybe an extra prayer for those we lost (and for their families,) over there in Afghanistan...
(Please make note of those who gave their all in the posts below and above this one…)

3 More Days to Resolve Constitutional Issues

Iraqis to Take 3 More Days to Resolve Constitutional Issues
By Donna Miles

American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, Aug. 22, 2005–

Iraq's National Assembly accepted a draft constitution today and will take the next three days to review the document and hammer out remaining differences before voting on it, the assembly spokesman announced today.

Hajim al-Hassani announced just minutes before today's midnight deadline that the assembly had accepted the document from the constitutional drafting committee.

The move came over the objections of Sunni Arabs, who oppose some provisions and have threatened to vote against it during the national referendum if the National Assembly approves the constitution in its current state, according to news reports.

Key sticking points involve federalism, the distribution of Iraq's oil wealth and the role of Islam in the new government, news reports said.

Hassani reflected the Iraqi National Assembly's goal of reflecting all Iraqis' interests in the new constitution. "There is a determination by all parties that there should be a consensus among all parties," he said, noting that the assembly members "will try, God willing, to reach the consensus over some of the points that are still outstanding."

Negotiators worked through the day to come up with a compromise, but as the clock ticked toward midnight, they opted to deliver the draft constitution to the National Assembly. The Iraqi Transitional Administrative Law had set an Aug. 15 deadline for the National Assembly to approve a draft constitution. However, the Iraqi parliament voted within 20 minutes of that deadline to extend it by seven days, until midnight today, or 4 p.m. Eastern time.

Once the National Assembly approves the draft constitution, it will be put to a national referendum by Oct. 15. If the Iraqi people ratify the constitution, parliamentary elections will be held by Dec. 15 to elect a permanent government.

However, if any three of Iraq's 18 provinces reject the draft constitution by two-thirds or more, the constitution will be defeated.

"Producing a constitution is a difficult process that involves debate and compromise," President Bush acknowledged during a speech earlier today at the Veterans of Foreign Wars' National Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The president noted that the 1787 U.S. Constitutional Convention "was home to political rivalries and regional disagreements," and that the document they ultimately produced "has been amended many times over."

"So Americans understand the challenges facing the framers of Iraq's new constitution," Bush said. "We admire their thoughtful deliberations. We salute their determination to lay the foundation for lasting democracy amid the ruins of a brutal dictatorship."

All Iraq's main ethnic and religious groups cooperated in the project, with all making "the courageous choice to join the political process, ...(to) produce a constitution that reflects the values and traditions of the Iraqi people," the president said.

A democratic constitution, once approved, "will be a landmark event in the history of Iraq and the history of the Middle East," he said.

VA Supports Sept. 11 "Freedom Walk"
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, Aug. 22, 2005

The secretary of veterans affairs has urged employees of his department, veterans and their families to take part in the Sept. 11 "America Supports You Freedom Walk" that begins at the Pentagon, officials at that agency announced Aug. 19.

"This is everyone's chance to salute the valor of ordinary Americans during the 9/11 attack and the extraordinary sacrifices of our service personnel in the global war on terrorism," VA Secretary R. James Nicholson said.

The America Supports You Freedom Walk begins Sept. 11 at 10 a. m. in the Pentagon's south parking lot. It winds two miles through Arlington National Cemetery and over the Potomac River before ending at the Reflecting Pool on the National Mall. The walk will include a free concert on mall by country music performer Clint Black.

Officials with the Defense Department's America Supports You program, which is sponsoring the Freedom Walk, hope to make it an annual event, with other communities holding their own Freedom Walks next year.

The America Supports You program seeks to highlight what communities, organizations and individuals throughout the United States are doing to support the troops.

Letter to President George W. Bush

Letter to President George W. Bush
August 21, 2005

Light the Fires Mr. President.

This killing is not going to end by Politics. Not yet at least. The only ‘reasoning' these countries that support and harbor these terrorist know is all-out force. Light the Fires Mr. President. Let Secretary of State Dr. Condoleezza Rice, UN Ambassador John Bolton and the United Nations clean up the political mess that follows. At least you’ll have put a huge dent into the stopping of this drip- drip- drip of death from our men and women in harms way.

They deserve better Mr. President…They deserve what you promised them and the world and the countries harboring these terrorists. You told the entire world this: “Over time it’s going to be important for nations to know they will be held accountable for inactivity… You’re either with us or against us in the fight against terror.”

Put the world again on notice… That we’ve had enough. Give these countries a stern warning with a deadline. If they do not do as asked, no told, go and LIGHT THE FIRES on them. We can not keep kicking this can down the road hoping things will change. The politics with these terrorists supporting countries is not working and never will.

We tried the political route all through the 80’s and the 90’s. All it got us was 9-11 and now this constant Drip of Death that seems to have no end in sight…

I’m sorry for the above rant… It’s just everytime I do a post in my blog about the Department of Defense announcing the death of another one of our soldiers… it just… hell it hurts. It really, really hurts. And of late… this Nation has had way too many hurts.

I’ll end this letter by asking you too please remind all Americans, over and over again, that we are at war. I also pray that you Mr. President and all the Generals of our Armed Forces, (the retired ones too,) never let politics get in the way of doing what has to get done to end this War on Terror.

Keep up the good fight…

Our Troops Know…

“Our troops know that they're fighting in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere to protect their fellow Americans from a savage enemy. They know that if we do not confront these evil men abroad, we will have to face them one day in our own cities and streets, and they know that the safety and security of every American is at stake in this war, and they know we will prevail.”

Death penalty has a very poor recognized effect in deterring crimes???

UN envoy in Iraq urges Government to eschew death penalty
20 August 2005 – Reacting to the recent application of capital punishment in Iraq, the senior envoy to the country has urged the Government to desist from carrying out executions.
On Wednesday, Iraqi Vice-President Adel Abdel Medhi signed a decree authorizing the execution of three men convicted of kidnapping, killing and rape.

Secretary-General Kofi Annan's Special Representative, Ashraf Qazi, issued a statement today voicing deep regret over the decision, citing the UN Human Rights Commission's condemnation of the death penalty.

Mr. Qazi also emphasized that “in the process of transition that Iraq is experiencing, one should look at consolidating the right to life instead of imposing the death penalty which has a very poor recognized effect in deterring crimes.”

Air Force Officer MIA From Vietnam War is Identified

No. 859-05 August 19, 2005
DoD (DPMO) Identifies Air Force Officer MIA from Vietnam War

The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) announced today that the remains of a U.S. serviceman, missing in action from the Vietnam War, have been identified and are being returned to his family for burial with full military honors.

He is:
Air Force Col. Gregg Hartness of Dallas, Texas.
He is to be buried in Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, D.C., on Sept. 14.

On Nov. 26, 1968, Hartness and lst Lt. Allen S. Shepherd, III, took off from Da Nang air base in South Vietnam, on a forward air control mission. While flying over Salavan Province in Laos, their O-2A ‘Skymaster’ was apparently struck by enemy fire and began to spin out of control. Shepherd bailed out and was rescued by an Air Force search and rescue team about nine hours later. He did not see Hartness bail out.

About 30 minutes after that rescue, the airborne team located the crash site of Hartness and Shepherd’s aircraft about 200 meters (660 feet) south of the rescue pickup point. The aircraft had been burning, but no contact with Hartness could be established. Enemy forces in the area precluded further rescue attempts, and electronic searches of the loss location detected no signals from the lost aircraft or pilot.

Between 1993 and 2003, joint U.S.-Lao investigators interviewed more than 60 witnesses in 39 different settlements in Laos before selecting a site for excavation. In January and February of 2005, the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command, with assistance from the Lao government, excavated a site in Salavan Province. They recovered human remains, aircraft wreckage, life support equipment and personal effects.

Of the 88,000 Americans missing from all conflicts, 1,815 are from the Vietnam War, with 372 of those within the country of Laos. Another 756 Americans have been accounted for in Southeast Asia since the end of the Vietnam War. Of those, 197 are from losses in Laos.

For additional information on the Defense Department’s mission to account for missing Americans, visit the DPMO website at: http://www.dtic.mil/dpmo or call (703) 699-1169.
