Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter ignored strong opposition from Israel and the White House to meet with Hamas supremo Khaled Meshaal in Damascus on Friday and by doing so inspired Israel's industry minister to say he is also ready to meet the exiled Islamist leader... Carter was expected to discuss with Meshaal the release of Israeli soldier Corporal Gilad Shalit, captured by Palestinian militants in June 2006. They were also to discuss the possibility of a truce between Hamas and Israel and the ending of sanctions on Gaza... The meeting was being held at a Hamas office in the Syrian capital...

How else can the Middle East see Carter's meeting in Syria with no less than the terrorist mastermind Khaled Mashaal, the leader of Hamas? ... This man Mashaal is responsible for dozens of deadly suicide bombings and thousands of mortar and rocket attacks that have killed more than 250 Israelis, not to speak of the violent takeover of the Gaza Strip by Hamas last June, which undercut newly revived efforts by Israel and the Palestinians to strike a final peace deal. And, oh, yes, several of Mashaal's victims have been Americans... There is bipartisan condemnation of Carter's meeting, but Carter has a long history of support for Hamas...
