Spacewalkers "Camping Out" to Prepare for Final Excursion

STS-129 Mission Specialists Randy Bresnik and Robert Satcher Jr., set to perform the third and final spacewalk of the mission Monday, are spending the night in the Quest airlock as part of the overnight “campout” procedure that helps purge nitrogen from their bloodstreams, preventing decompression sickness once they move out into the vacuum of space.

The International Space Station crew began its sleep shift at 5:58 p.m. EST, and the shuttle crew headed to bed a half hour later. Both crews are set to wake up Monday at 2:28 a.m.

Astronauts Performing Final STS-129 Spacewalk

Mission Specialists Randy Bresnik and Robert Satcher Jr. began their mission's final spacewalk at 8:24 a.m. EST. They will transfer an oxygen filled High Pressure Gas Tank (HPGT) from the EXPRESS Logistics Carrier 2, or ELC2, located on the starboard truss, to a spot on the outside of the Quest Airlock. The tank will be used to replenish atmosphere lost when spacewalkers enter and exit the station.

While Satcher is relocating the HPGT, Bresnik will install the seventh Materials International Space Station Experiment, or MISSE 7. This is the most advanced of the MISSE payloads to date and will be the first to receive power directly from the station and use the station’s communication system to send commands and downlink real-time data.

On Sunday, Bresnik told the flight controllers his new daughter, Abigail Mae Bresnik, had been born in Houston at 11:04 p.m. CST Saturday. He said his wife Rebecca and new daughter, 6 pounds, 13 ounces and 20 inches long, were doing well. Bresnik got the news by private phone patch through mission control shortly after the crew was awakened..

Space Shuttle Atlantis Mission Specialist Randy Bresnik is a new father.
.
At 5:14 a.m. CST, Bresnik called Mission Control and announced the birth of his daughter. Abigail Mae Bresnik arrived at 11:04 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21 in Houston, TX. He reported his wife, Rebecca, and baby are doing well. He also thanked the flight control team and flight surgeon for their support and assistance.
.
This is the second time a baby has been born to an American astronaut during his spaceflight. Mike Fincke’s daughter was born in June 2004 while he was aboard the International Space Station.

Spacewalkers Mike Foreman and Randy Bresnik completed a six hour, eight minute spacewalk at 3:39 p.m. EST.

The spacewalking pair finished all their assigned work way ahead of schedule and completed several “get ahead” tasks. They deployed the last two of the Payload Attach Systems that remained on the outside of the International Space Station.
.
This was the second of three STS-129 spacewalks, the 229th conducted by U.S. astronauts, the fifth for Foreman and the first for Bresnik. It was the 135th in support of International Space Station assembly and maintenance, totaling 843 hours, 36 minutes. It was the 107th spacewalk out of the space station, totaling 656 hours, 21 minutes.

Astronauts Complete Second Spacewalk

STS-129 Mission Specialists Mike Foreman and Randy Bresnik wrapped up a successful six-hour, eight-minute spacewalk after completing their scheduled tasks ahead of schedule. Official end of the spacewalk was at 3:39 p.m. EST. It was the second of the three scheduled during Atlantis’ visit to the International Space Station.

The start was a little later than planned, about 9:30 a.m., because a false depressurization alarm had sounded on the station at 9:53 p.m. Friday, interrupting the crews’ sleep and the spacewalkers’ campout in the Quest airlock. The spacewalkers completed the process of reducing the nitrogen in their blood by exercising while breathing oxygen.

Foreman and Bresnik installed an antenna assembly on a Columbus module handrail, relocated the station’s floating potential measurement unit to the Port 1 truss and deployed a second Payload Attachment System (PAS) on the upper part of the Starboard 3 (S3) truss.
.
After completing the installation of a wireless video system on S3 an hour ahead of schedule, the spacewalkers had time to perform a get-ahead task. Foreman and Bresnik deployed a third PAS, this one on the Earth-facing side of S3. This task, originally schedule for the mission’s third spacewalk, was accomplished smoothly and quickly.

Just before the beginning of the Saturday spacewalk, Express Logistics Carrier 2 was installed on S3 by the station’s robotic arm, operated by Mission Specialists Leland Melvin and Nicole Stott. It holds almost 10,000 pounds of large spares for the station, including an attitude-control gyroscope, a high-pressure oxygen tank and a pump module.

A sister cargo carrier, ELC 1, also came to the station on Atlantis and was installed Thursday.

Satcher and Bresnik make 3rd and final scheduled Spacewalk Monday.

Management Team Gives "Go" for Atlantis Launch

Launch countdown operations are on schedule with no issues to report, according to officials at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida during the STS-129 prelaunch briefing. With the unfortunate scrub of the Atlas rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station today, space shuttle Atlantis is cleared for launch at 2:28 p.m. EST Monday.

"It was a really smooth meeting … Atlantis is ready to go," Mike Moses, space shuttle launch integration manager said. (There was) "a unanimous vote to proceed with the launch countdown."

Mike Leinbach, space shuttle launch director said, "… We're right on the money. We're not tracking any issues with the vehicle, flight elements or ground systems. I'm happy to report we're ready to go."

Shuttle Weather Officer Kathy Winters reported that the forecast continues to be very favorable for launch day with only a 10-percent chance that weather will be a concern for liftoff and the fueling of Atlantis' external tank.
. .

Weather also is looking good for the transatlantic abort, or TAL, sites where the shuttle could land in the unlikely event of an emergency. The only issue Winters mentioned was the possibility of some high seas where the solid rocket booster recovery ships are stationed.

On Sunday at about 5:30 p.m., the Rotating Service Structure that protects the shuttle from inclement weather will be rolled away. Loading of propellants into the external tank is scheduled to begin at around 5 a.m. on Monday.

The Rotating Service Structure was rolled back Sunday evening revealing Space Shuttle Atlantis poised for launch. The STS-129 countdown is proceeding smoothly and on schedule. The astronauts will go to sleep around 9 p.m. and awaken at 4:30 a.m. EST.

Also, at 4:30 a.m. Monday morning, the Mission Management Team will meet to give the “go” for tanking of Space Shuttle Atlantis. Tanking is scheduled to begin at 5 a.m. .

Weather remains at 90 percent favorable for an on-time liftoff at 1:28pm CST Monday afternoon..
