Omar, at the website, Iraq the Model, has posted a very informative read today that starts off like this... The political process in Iraq has reached another very critical and important stage. This is the time that will decide if Iraq will emerge as a country that can sustain itself and where groups of people-while have many differences-can share this nation and coexist peacefully...

Update on Troop Surge in Iraq
Note: Operation Enforcing the Law, (better known as the Troop Surge,) was launched in mid-February to secure Baghdad and western Iraq and to tamp down on the violence in those areas.
As of Sunday, May 6, 2oo7
* Eighty percent of the U.S. military units involved with the surge of troops into Baghdad and western Iraq are in place.
* Four of the five American reinforcement brigades are now in Iraq.
* An additional U.S. brigade is slated to arrive by June 1st.
* Iraqi-on-Iraqi sectarian violence has decreased since the operation began.
* Yet... continued spectacular al Qaeda-staged barbarity terrorist attacks along with other insurgents attacks are definitely making the security situation in Iraq complex and challenging.
* About 60 joint U.S.-Iraqi security stations have been established in and around Baghdad to deny insurgents the opportunity to embed themselves among the city's residents.
* Tribal leaders in Anbar province have now turned their backs on the al Qaeda terrorist group... a true sign of promise and hope in the making.
All Americans should heed these words by Army Maj. Gen. William B. Caldwell IV, spokesman for Multinational Force Iraq... “Our efforts may get harder before life gets easier for the Iraqis.”... Further progress in Iraq will depend on commitment, perseverance and sacrifice... “Military action is necessary (in Iraq) to provide the opportunity to reach long-term political solutions, but it alone is not enough.”
