* The Guardian brings us the following troubling news out of Egypt today and their report starts off like this… Egypt's military rulers have held emergency talks with Christian leaders after the worst violence since February's revolution left 26 people dead and 300 injured - and raised grave doubts about the country's democratic transition… The Coptic church called on followers to fast and pray for three days from Tuesday to mourn Christians killed in clashes with Muslims and security forces on Sunday night, now the subject of an investigation ordered by the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (Scaf), led by Field Marshal Mohammed Hussein Tantawi… Issam Sharaf, the interim prime minister, warned of a "despicable conspiracy" against Egypt and called for unity…

About this News Video: Israel has carried out air strikes over Gaza after a series of attacks in southern Israel killed at least eight people… The air strikes killed at least six people, including five members of the Hamas-linked Popular Resistance Committees and a young boy… The air raid came in response to an attack on vehicles heading towards the Israeli resort of Eilat on Thursday. Al Jazeera's Keith Miller reports.

Rumors are flying wildly this evening in Egypt that President Mubarak will announce he is stepping down later tonight on State TV.

* The New York Times is reporting... Egypt’s armed forces on Thursday announced that they had begun to take "necessary measures to protect the nation and support the legitimate demands of the people,” a step that suggested the military intends to take a commanding role in administering the strife-torn nation... The announcement of an enhanced role for the military came as officials in President Hosni Mubarak’s government suggested a momentous shift in power was underway, including a possible transfer of power from Mr. Mubarak to his Vice President Omar Suleiman...

And the peoples of Egypt who were cheering wildly with happiness from the center of Cairo’s Tahrir Square... now shout in Anger... “DOWN WITH MUBARAK”!!!

Special note: Army says it will react if Protesters refuse this new plan... Don’t know about you but I for one got a BAD feeling it is fixing to get real ugly again in the streets of Cairo.

Egypt's opposition movement extended its protest to the street outside parliament and tapped allies in the labor unions to begin strikes of their own, pursuing a strategy of gradually ratcheting up pressure on a regime that is digging in behind President Hosni Mubarak... Vice President Omar Suleiman warned protesters that the government wouldn't allow chaos and reiterated that Mr. Mubarak won't step down...

With a new wave of demonstrations in Tahrir Square on Tuesday - by some measures the largest anti-government protests in the two-week uprising - Egyptians loudly rejected their government’s approach to political change and renewed their demands for the immediate resignation of President Hosni Mubarak...

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates says the pro-democracy demonstrations in Egypt and Tunisia should inspire other governments in the Middle East to enact reforms he says the United States has been advocating for years. In his first public comments since the Egyptian protests began two weeks ago, Gates also said the Egyptian military has done everything U.S. officials have asked, and made a contribution to what he called “the evolution of democracy” in the country... Secretary Gates calls the protests in Tunisia and Egypt “a spontaneous manifestation of discontent,” and he says other governments in the region should take note, and take action...

* MSNBC gets us started this Sunday with some good reporting that starts off like this... Egypt's vice president met a broad representation of major opposition groups for the first time Sunday and offered new concessions including freedom of the press, release of those detained since anti-government protests began nearly two weeks ago and the eventual lifting of the country's hated emergency laws... Two of the groups that attended the meeting said this was only a first step in a dialogue which has yet to meet their central demand — the immediate ouster of longtime President Hosni Mubarak...
