The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Spc. Stephen M. Kowalczyk, 32, of San Diego, died March 14th in Muqdadiyah, Iraq, when his unit came in contact with enemy forces using small arms fire. Kowalczyk was assigned to the 6th Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.
