News Videos: First Person Accounts - Witnesses Recount Sunday’s Fatal Indy Crash - Racing World In Mourning For Driver Dan Wheldon

- CNN/GETTY Image --
.
* CNN brings us the following report and it starts off like this… The racing world was in mourning Monday after two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon, an Englishman with a ready smile and engaging manner, was killed Sunday in a multicar crash at the Las Vegas Indy 300… "You know, this is a sport predicated on speed and there are a lot of safety channels," Sports Illustrated senior writer Jon Wertheim said Monday. But he added, "The fact of the matter is, you're dealing with very, very fast automobiles. They're not heavy cars. ... There is, unfortunately, an assumption of risk when you get into one of those race cars."… Following Wheldon's death in the 15-car fiery crash, the remainder of the race -- the marquee event of the IZOD IndyCar World Championships -- was canceled. The remaining drivers, many of them visibly emotional after a meeting with IndyCar officials, did a five-lap salute in Wheldon's honor as "Amazing Grace" played… Wheldon, 33, died from "unsurvivable injuries," IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard said Sunday… Video of the crash showed cars spinning out of control and bursting into flames, spewing smoke and debris… "I've never seen a crash like this," said Carlos Diaz, an anchor on CNN sister station HLN who said he's been around racing his entire life. He said one witness told him "it was like a bomb went off."…

Bin Laden’s Death May Impact Afghanistan, Gates Says
Written by Jim Garamone - American Forces Press Service
Originally posted 5/06/11
.
SEYMOUR JOHNSON AIR FORCE BASE, N.C. - The killing of Osama bin Laden “could be a game changer” that affects the situation in Afghanistan, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said here today.
.
Still, it will take time before the situation clarifies, Gates told about 450 airmen at the 335th and 336th fighter squadrons.
.
“Bin Laden and [Taliban leader] Mullah Omar had a very close personal relationship, and there are others in the Taliban who have felt betrayed by al-Qaida -- [they feel] it was because of al-Qaida’s attack on the United States that the Taliban got thrown out of Afghanistan,” the secretary said. “We’ll have to see what that relationship looks like.”
.
Officials may know in six months or so how bin Laden’s death has affected al-Qaida operations in Afghanistan and elsewhere, Gates said.
.
The secretary described U.S. relations in the region as complex. Using Pakistan as an example, the secretary said he would have been astounded if someone had told him two years ago that Pakistan would have 140,000 troops on its western border with Afghanistan and was going to drive the Pakistani Taliban and al-Qaida from South Waziristan and the Swat Valley.
.
“I would have said that’s not going to happen, but it has,” he said.
.
Pakistan has pulled troops from its border with India and has taken thousands of casualties in the fight against the terrorists. Pakistan also allows a huge percentage of the logistics sent to troops in Afghanistan to flow across their country, Gates said.
.
The United States and Pakistan are firm partners in the fight against terrorism, Gates said. However, he added, the Pakistanis may be concerned that United States’ current interest in the region may diminish with time.
.
“At the same time there is no question that they hedge their bets,” he said of Pakistan’s leadership. “Their view is that we have abandoned them four times in the last 45 years, and they are still not sure we are going to stay in the region. They saw us leave after the Soviets were thrown out of Afghanistan in 1989 and they are not confident that we won’t leave again when we have accomplished our mission in Afghanistan.”
.
Pakistan and the United States have to keep working on their relationship, Gates said. At the tactical level -- across the border with Afghanistan -- the relationship is good and getting better, he said. U.S. and Pakistani forces take turns being the “hammer and anvil” with the Taliban stuck in the middle.
.
“I would say it is a relationship we just have to keep working at,” he said.

[At the conclusion of the briefing, DVDs with the five video segments were handed out to the press corps along with the following ON THE RECORD statement from Leon E. Panetta, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency: “This mission goes to the heart of what the CIA is all about: protecting America and building a better world for our children. It demonstrates the perseverance, skill, and sheer courage of the men and women who stand watch for our nation, day in and day out. And it is a model of seamless collaboration, both within the Intelligence Community and with the US military. The material found in the compound only further confirms how important it was to go after Bin Laden. Since 9/11, this is what the American people have expected of us. In this critical operation, we delivered.”]

The Operation that Killed Bin Ladin
Originally posted on CIA website May 4th, 2011
.Image credit: DoD Press Briefing 5/02/11 - Illustration of Bin Ladin’s Compound
.
In the early morning hours of May 2nd, a U.S. military raid of an al-Qa’ida compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, killed America’s most wanted terrorist, Usama Bin Ladin.
.
The mission’s success was the culmination of many years of complex, thorough, and highly-advanced intelligence operations and analysis led by the CIA with support from partners across the Intelligence Community. U.S. agencies had been collecting intelligence about the compound since it was discovered in August, 2010. Multiple streams of intelligence led to the assessment that Bin Ladin was hiding there, protected by two of his closest facilitators.
.
The strike on the compound, authorized by the President on April 29th, was a surgical raid by a small team of special operations forces. The raid was designed to minimize collateral damage and to pose as little risk as possible to non-combatants on the compound or to Pakistani civilians in the neighborhood.
.
* The Compound
.
The compound where Bin Ladin was hiding is in Abbottabad, a town in Pakistan’s Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Province (formerly the Northwest Frontier Province), about 35 miles north of Islamabad. The compound and its main residence had extensive security features: high walls topped with barbed wire, double entry gates, opaque windows, no apparent Internet or telephone connection, and the residents burned their trash. It was valued at $1 million, but the two al-Qa’ida facilitators who owned it had no apparent source of wealth.
.
* The Impact
.
The death of Usama Bin Ladin marks the single greatest victory in the U.S.-led campaign to disrupt, dismantle, and defeat al-Qa’ida. It is a major and essential step in bringing about the terrorist organization’s eventual dissolution.
.
Bin Ladin was al-Qa’ida’s founder and only amir, or commander, in its 22-year history. He was largely responsible for the organization’s mystique, its ability to raise money and attract new recruits, and its focus on the United States as a target for terrorist attacks. As the only al-Qa’ida leader whose authority was universally respected, he also maintained the group’s cohesion.
.
Although al-Qa’ida may not fragment immediately, the loss of Bin Ladin puts the deadly organization on a path of decline that will be difficult to reverse.

* Fox News brings us this troubling report today and it goes in part like this... Pakistan is calling for cuts in the U.S. military personnel inside the country after U.S. Navy SEALs killed Usama bin Laden in his Pakistan compound -- without Pakistan's help or prior knowledge. ... In a statement Thursday, Pakistan's army fired back, saying U.S. military personnel inside the country would be reduced to the "minimum essential" levels to protest the American commando raid that killed bin Laden early Monday local time. The army also threatened to cut cooperation with Washington if it stages more unilateral raids on its territory...

With that said.... let me say this. I am SOOOOO HAPPY Endeavour didn’t go up last week with all that has gone down over the last few days with the killing of Osama bin Laden.
.
The final mission of this great Ship deserves all our attention... the MSM’s attention too... So yes, I am now real happy it didn’t go up, though I was truly disappointed at the time when it didn’t.
.
Yes, like everyone else, I too am truly happy with the killing of Osama and with the way our President manned up and took the actions he did. Good job Mr. President. Enjoy the success while you can for the American people have short memories on such things. VERY short...
