President Obama Asserts Executive Privilege
Backing His Embattled Attorney General Erick Holder Over Botched Arms Smuggling Operation Fast and Furious
Today the House voted to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress with a vote of 255-67 on criminal contempt charges and 258-95 on civil contempt charges
Thursday, June 28, 2012
.
CBS brings us this up to date report at 4:35pm CDT and it starts off like this... The House of Representatives voted to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress Thursday for failing to provide documents relating to the Fast and Furious gunwalking program… The House took two votes, one on criminal contempt charges, which passed 255-67. The criminal contempt of Congress is likely not to go anywhere as the Justice Department, which Holder heads, is the department responsible for opening a criminal investigation… The second charge, which passed 258-95, was a civil contempt charge, could move to federal court where it could take years to litigate. Though the action puts more pressure on the administration to abide by the subpoenas and provide requested documents… The Democratic Party was split on the action. Seventeen members voted with the Republicans to hold Holder in criminal contempt while just under two dozen voted to hold him in civil contempt. But most, led by the Congressional Black Caucus, walked off the floor to protest the vote, which they called "appalling."…

How fast the news can change and in just a few hours too!
.
I… like many others have been keeping up with all this news over the botched arms smuggling operation “Fast and Furious”. But to the best of my knowledge, I haven’t posted anything on all this mess and it has been going on for over a year now. That is until early this Wednesday morning when EVERYTHING CHANGED and sent the News Media into all kinds of a reporting frenzy.
.
What set everyone off? President Obama did when he granted his Attorney General Eric Holder permission to assert executive privilege to withhold documents from the Republican-Led Congressional Committee. What a mess!!!
Here’s what started the chain of events this morning…
(Deputy Attorney General James Cole sent the following letter to Issa)

The Honorable Darrell E. Issa
Chairman
June 20, 2012
Committee on Oversight and Government Reform
U.S. House of Representatives
Washington, DC 20515

Dear Mr. Chairman:

After you rejected the Department's recent offers of additional accommodations, you stated that the Committee intends to proceed with its scheduled meeting to consider a resolution citing the Attorney General for contempt for failing to comply with the Committee's subpoena of October 11, 2011. I write now to inform you that the President has asserted executive privilege over the relevant post-February 4, 2011, documents.

We regret that we have arrived at this point, after the many steps we have taken to address the Committee's concerns and to accommodate the Committee's legitimate oversight interests regarding Operation Fast and Furious. Although we are deeply disappointed that the Committee appears intent on proceeding with a contempt vote, the Department remains willing to work with the Committee to reach a mutually satisfactory resolution of the outstanding issues…

* FOX News just posted this up-to-date report and it starts off like this… Rep. Darrell Issa pressed ahead with a committee vote Wednesday to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress, despite an eleventh-hour move by President Obama to assert executive privilege over the Fast and Furious documents at the heart of the dispute… The announcement touched off a caustic debate on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee that lasted well into the afternoon, as Democrats accused Issa of prosecuting a "political witch hunt" and Republicans stepped up their criticism of Holder's "stonewalling" over the Fast and Furious probe. Even for Washington, the tone at the hearing was decidedly bitter and accusatory… The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee was first informed of the president's decision to assert executive privilege in a letter Wednesday morning, shortly before the contempt vote was scheduled….

* New York Post Opinion Columnist Michael A. Walsh writes in part: …Issa surely feels like Charlie Brown charging the football, with Holder as Lucy. For over a year, he’s been trying to pin down the slippery AG, issuing one “last chance” after another, dragging Holder in front of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform (on top of Senate appearances) and firing off angry letter after angry letter… Each time, Holder has scampered off, meeting Issa’s legitimate demands with contempt -- for the congressman, the Congress itself and the rule of law.
He tried it again yesterday after his offer was rebuffed, calling Issa’s demands “political gamesmanship” and cracking, “The ball’s in their court.” Um… no, Mr. Attorney General. The ball’s in your court…

* TheGuardian brings us the following good news, (that is if you’re of the Republican persuasion,) and their report goes in part like this The Anthony Weiner scandal dealt another blow to the Democratic Party on Tuesday when the Republicans stormed to victory in a special election for his former congressional seat in New York City Bob Turner became the first Republican to win New York's ninth congressional district since 1920, capitalising on voter discontent with the grim state of the economy and the lagging popularity of the Obama administration… With three registered Democrats to every Republican in the district, Turner's victory was remarkable…

* Our friends at Politico have this great read posted-up on their website early this Wednesday morning and it starts off like this… The Democratic Party’s rare loss of a congressional seat in its urban heartland Tuesday, accompanied by a blowout defeat in a Nevada special election, marked the latest in a string of demoralizing setbacks that threatened to deepen the party’s crisis of confidence and raise concerns about President Barack Obama’s political fortunes…

* Reuters.com has this good read posted up on their website today and it starts off like this… Russians queued up in Moscow at the weekend to press - quite literally - a reset button on U.S.-Russian relations, a publicity stunt meant to clear the air on the eve of U.S. President Barack Obama's visit… The stunt centered on the symbolic red button U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gave to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in March, urging him to press it to reinvigorate relations between their two nations… Lavrov was quick to point out that the Americans had mis-spelled the Russian word on the button's label, giving it the meaning of "overload" instead of "reset."…

President Obama To Unveil NEW Foreclosure Prevention Program Today

...
Wednesday, February 18, 2009
.
President Obama today will unveil a $75 billion foreclosure prevention program, which the administration expects to reach up to 9 million homeowners… "The plan I'm announcing focuses on rescuing families who have played by the rules and acted responsibly: by refinancing loans for millions of families in traditional mortgages who are underwater or close to it," Obama will say at a speech in Mesa, Ariz., according to an advance text released by the White House… The Homeowner Affordability and Stability Plan includes measures to allow homeowners to refinance into loans with cheaper payments, according to a summary of the plan. For example, if a lender agrees to lower a borrower's payment so that it comprises no more than 38 percent of his income, the government would pay to lower the payments further to 31 percent of income. The aim would be to make the payments affordable…

Help for homeowners
Wednesday
, February 18, 2009
.
The President’s strategy for economic recovery is a stool with several legs, as he’s said, and one of them is solving the foreclosure crisis.
.
"We must stem the spread of foreclosures and falling home values for all Americans, and do everything we can to help responsible homeowners stay in their homes," he said yesterday as he signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act into law.
.
Though communities across the country have been affected by the crisis, Arizona has been hit particularly hard -- in 2008, only two states had more foreclosures.
.
And President Obama is there today, in Phoenix, to unveil his "Homeowner Affordability and Stability Plan," which will help bring relief to homeowners and bring some order to the housing market.
.
The President will talk more about his plan a little later today. In the meantime, we’re sure you have a lot of questions, like, Am I eligible for assistance? Might I be able to modify my loan? When do I apply? We've put together an example sheet that will show you
what options might be available to you, depending on the circumstances of your mortgage, as well as answers to some common questions (below)...

Signed, sealed, delivered: ARRA
.
The economic recovery package is essential for our nation's economy, for its infrastructure, and for our energy, health, and education needs -- and now it's the law. After months of planning and weeks of negotiation, President Obama signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act today in Denver, CO.
.
"What I am signing is a balanced plan with a mix of tax cuts and investments. It is a plan that’s been put together without earmarks or the usual pork barrel spending. And it is a plan that will be implemented with an unprecedented level of transparency and accountability," President Obama said before signing the bill into law. "And we expect you, the American people, to hold us accountable for the results. That is why we have created Recovery.gov – so every American can go online and see how their money is being spent."
.
That site, Recovery.gov, is now live. You can go there to see projections -- based on language in the legislation -- of where your money will go, broken down state-by-state. And over the coming weeks and months, as the funds start to go out, you'll be able to see far more detailed information.
.
It's just the beginning of a long process, of course -- on Air Force One today, Press Secretary Robert Gibbs called it "a strong start towards economic viability."
.
"Our American story is not -- and has never been -- about things coming easy," the President said in his remarks at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. "It’s about rising to the moment when the moment is hard, converting crisis into opportunity, and seeing to it that we emerge from whatever trials we face stronger than we were before."
.
>Before the signing, President Obama toured the museum's solar panel installation.
