The glow from a health care triumph faded quickly for President Barack Obama on Sunday as Democrats realized the bill they fought so hard to pass in the House has nowhere to go in the Senate... As the House Democratic Leadership tries to gather support for their massive small business tax and government takeover of health care, they are finding reluctance from many in their own caucus. Why? Well, many Democrats who walked the plank and voted for the Speaker’s unpopular national energy tax faced a blistering reaction back home, and the Senate looks unlikely to act on the legislation – meaning House Democrats got “BTU-ed” all over again.

Roll Call this morning reported on the Democratic House Members’ unease, and the hurdle it is creating:

“Democrats who helped the sweeping climate
change bill squeak through before jetting home for the July Fourth break got a
surprisingly ugly homecoming, encountering a barrage of protests, attack ads and
negative press. Police turned up at a local protest aimed at Rep. Allen Boyd
(Fla.), a leader of the moderate Blue Dog Coalition. Freshman Rep. John Adler
(N.J.) told a local paper he got shoved.”
.
“The bruising
endured by the moderates — along with serious substantive concerns —prompted
them last week to derail the planned Friday rollout of the health care bill. And
it presents a continuing challenge to leaders hoping to wrap work on the package
this month. ‘They are completely and totally rattled,’ one senior Democratic
aide said of the centrists. ‘I’ve never seen them as bad as they are
now.’”

Those Democrats are right to be worried, since Politico finds little enthusiasm for Speaker Pelosi’s national energy tax in the Senate:

“President Barack Obama’s plan for climate change legislation faces
an extraordinarily tough climb in the Senate. For proof, look no further than to
some of Obama’s closest allies.”

“‘We’ve got to be very careful with what we do with this legislation,’
Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.), a near—constant cable surrogate during Obama’s
presidential campaign, told Missouri talk radio show host Mike Ferguson last
week. ‘We need to be a leader in the world, but we don’t want to be a
sucker.’”

“When it comes
to climate change, McCaskill and other Midwestern Democrats are putting their
home-state concerns ahead of one of the president’s biggest first-year
priorities; many of them fear that the legislation, which narrowly passed the
House earlier this month, will hurt manufacturing- and coal-dependent areas that
are already struggling.”

Republicans have a better solution. Our “all of the above” plan will lower energy costs, clean up the environment, and create millions of new American jobs. When will the Democratic leaders realize that we need a serious plan to help our economy and reduce our dependence on foreign sources of energy, not the job-killing boondoggle like Speaker Pelosi’s national energy tax?

I'm sure by now you've heard of the almost one trillion dollar stimulus package moving through the U.S. Senate.

But it's not really a stimulus bill. It's a big government, big corruption, and big pork bill.

Among many other wasteful, non-stimulative projects, it includes $650 million for digital TV coupons, $1 billion for climate satellite and habitat restoration programs, and $600 million to replace a portion of the federal government vehicle fleet.
.
In the video below, I lay out in stark terms exactly why this bill, as currently written, is not worthy of our support. Please take a moment to watch.

The Gallup Poll found that 54% of Americans either want to see major changes to the current plan, or they outright reject it. Other surveys are also indicating that public support is plummeting. Politicians can call it stimulus and they can call it change, but it's just more of the same - and the American people are starting to realize it.

House Democratic leaders are subverting the will of a bipartisan majority of House members by failing to allow a vote on the Senate FISA bill - a bill which received overwhelming bipartisan support by a vote of 68 to 29.

Now, after weeks of inaction, the House appears to be taking a step backward and plans to introduce a bill that will deprive our intelligence professionals of the tools they need to protect the country from terrorist attack. If reports are accurate, the House Democratic leadership's proposal has a number of serious flaws which would make it dead on arrival.

The proposal intends to put in place a cumbersome court approval process that could delay collecting intelligence on foreign terrorists, which could cause us to lose vital intelligence.

The authorities to conduct foreign surveillance - inadequate as they are - would sunset in less than two years. Our intelligence professionals cannot do their jobs effectively if the tools they use are continuously expiring.

The bill also fails to provide liability protection to companies believed to have helped defend the country after 9/11.

As the bipartisan Senate Select Committee on Intelligence concluded, the failure to extend liability protection will undermine the private sector's willingness to help the Intelligence Community do its job. Without the assistance of the private sector, our intelligence agencies will be hobbled in their efforts to protect the country from attack.

It is clear that House Democratic leaders have once again bowed to the demands of class-action trial lawyers, MoveOn.org, and Code Pink and put their ideological interests ahead of the national interest. The priorities of House leaders are dangerously misplaced. Instead of providing liability protection to companies that did their patriotic duty, House leaders would establish a commission to examine intelligence activities in the past that helped protect the country from further attacks after 9/11.

We can draw only one conclusion from this - House leaders are more interested in playing politics with past efforts to protect the country than they are in preventing terrorist attacks in the future.

House Democratic leaders appear to have forgotten that the Administration has already briefed, among others, the House Intelligence and Judiciary Committees on these intelligence activities and provided access to related documents. There is no good reason for additional review by a commission.

House Democratic leaders know that this proposal is unacceptable to the Intelligence Community, the U.S. Senate, and the Administration. It is time for House Democratic leaders to get serious about our national security, put aside these partisan games, and bring the bipartisan Senate bill to a vote immediately.

The U.S. Congress gave final approval to a $151 billion economic stimulus package that will send tax rebate checks to more than 100 million households in an effort to boost the slowing economy... If I’m reading it right... Only TWO Republicans went along with the Dems...

They are: Wayne Thomas Gilchrest from Maryland’s 1st district and Walter B. Jones of North Carolina’s 3rd district.
(These two need to be voted out of office...)

With that said... I personally want to thank my fellow Republicans in the House, (along with the handful of the others that voted against it,) for standing firm and opposing this Bill. Good job!!! Even if we did end up just barely losing......

Today I'm joined here at the White House by veterans, family members of people serving in combat, family members of those who have sacrificed. I am honored that they have joined me here today.

Here in Washington, members of both parties recognize that our most solemn responsibility is to support our troops in the war on terror. Yet, today, a narrow majority in the House of Representatives abdicated its responsibility by passing a war spending bill that has no chance of becoming law, and brings us no closer to getting our troops the resources they need to do their job.

The purpose of the emergency war spending bill I requested was to provide our troops with vital funding. Instead, Democrats in the House, in an act of political theater, voted to substitute their judgment for that of our military commanders on the ground in Iraq. They set rigid restrictions that will require an army of lawyers to interpret. They set an arbitrary date for withdrawal without regard for conditions on the ground. And they tacked on billions for pet projects that have nothing to do with winning the war on terror. This bill has too much pork, too many conditions and an artificial timetable for withdrawal.

As I have made clear for weeks, I will veto it if it comes to my desk. And because the vote in the House was so close, it is clear that my veto would be sustained. Today's action in the House does only one thing: it delays the delivering of vital resources for our troops. A narrow majority has decided to take this course, just as General Petraeus and his troops are carrying out a new strategy to help the Iraqis secure their capital city.

Amid the real challenges in Iraq, we're beginning to see some signs of progress. Yet, to score political points, the Democratic majority in the House has shown it is willing to undermine the gains our troops are making on the ground.

Democrats want to make clear that they oppose the war in Iraq. They have made their point. For some, that is not enough. These Democrats believe that the longer they can delay funding for our troops, the more likely they are to force me to accept restrictions on our commanders, an artificial timetable for withdrawal, and their pet spending projects. This is not going to happen. Our men and women in uniform need these emergency war funds. The Secretary of Defense has warned that if Congress does not approve the emergency funding for our troops by April the 15th, our men and women in uniform will face significant disruptions, and so would their families.

The Democrats have sent their message, now it's time to send their money. This is an important moment -- a decision for the new leaders in Congress. Our men in women in uniform should not have to worry that politicians in Washington will deny them the funds and the flexibility they need to win. Congress needs to send me a clean bill that I can sign without delay. I expect Congress to do its duty and to fund our troops, and so do the American people -- and so do the good men and women standing with me here today.
