* TimesOnline.co.uk had the following report posted up on their website this Thursday morning and it starts off like this… Iranian police fired tear-gas and shots into the air today to disperse thousands of demonstrators who had defied official warnings and staged a march to mark the 10th anniversary of a bloody student uprising… Protesters chanted “Death to the dictator” as they gathered in the streets around Tehran University, the epicentre of the 1999 protests, which were crushed by police and Basiji vigilantes… Today, police deployed reinforcements after a first volley of tear-gas failed to disperse the demonstrators, who continued to grow in number, according to eyewitnesses. Police then fired a second volley of the gas…

* YNet.com has this take and it goes in part like this… According to some reports, demonstrators were chanting "Death to the Dictator," while police helicopters were keeping an eye on them from the air… "They were about 250 people who shouted in favor of (defeated presidential candidate Mirhossein) Mousavi and made the victory sign. Police dispersed them," a witness, who asked not to be named, told Reuters… According to later reports, security forces directed live fire at demonstrators. An eyewitness told the New York Times website that a woman with a blood-soaked jacket was seen running away from a protest scene. According to a report by an exiled Iranian blogger considered credible, at least three people sustained gunshot wounds in the rallies…

* AP brings us the following report early this Wednesday afternoon and it starts off like this… Protesters and riot police clashed in the streets around Iran's parliament Wednesday as hundreds of people converged on a Tehran square in defiance of government orders to halt demonstrations demanding a new presidential election, witnesses said… Police beat the protesters gathered on Baharestan Square with batons and fired tear gas canisters and rounds of ammunition into the air, the witnesses told The Associated Press. They said some demonstrators fought back while others fled to another Tehran plaza, Sepah Square, about a mile (2 kilometers) to the north… A helicopter could be seen hovering over central Tehran, where a witness told the AP that the area was swarming with hundreds of riot police who were trying to prevent people from gathering even briefly. Thousands more security officers filled the surrounding streets, said the witness, who declined to give his name for fear of government reprisals… Amateur video posted Wednesday on YouTube showed young men and women throwing rocks and pushing barricades, one blazing, in the street. Others shouted: "Death to the dictator!"…

About this video: Basij shot to death a young woman in Tehran's Saturday, June 20th Protests.At 19:05, June 20th…Place: Karekar Ave., at the corner crossing Khosravi St. and Salehi St..A young woman who was standing aside with her father watching the protests was shot by a basij member hiding on the rooftop of a civilian house. He had clear shot at the girl and could not miss her. However, he aimed straight her heart. I am a doctor, so I rushed to try to save her. But the impact of the gunshot was so fierce that the bullet had blasted inside the victim's chest, and she died in less than 2 minutes… The protests were going on about 1 kilometer away in the main street and some of the protesting crowd were running from tear gas used among them, towards Salehi St… The film is shot by my friend who was standing beside me… Please let the world know…

Statement from the President on Iran

The Iranian government must understand that the world is watching. We mourn each and every innocent life that is lost. We call on the Iranian government to stop all violent and unjust actions against its own people. The universal rights to assembly and free speech must be respected, and the United States stands with all who seek to exercise those rights.

As I said in Cairo, suppressing ideas never succeeds in making them go away. The Iranian people will ultimately judge the actions of their own government. If the Iranian government seeks the respect of the international community, it must respect the dignity of its own people and govern through consent, not coercion.

Martin Luther King once said – “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” I believe that. The international community believes that. And right now, we are bearing witness to the Iranian peoples’ belief in that truth, and we will continue to bear witness.

Where are MEN like President Bush/Reagan, the champions of freedom, when the Iranian people need them most? At least we KNOW they would have the Iranian Peoples backs, in EVERY possible way.

* BBC has this following article posted up on their website early this afternoon and it starts off like this… The crisis over the Iranian election has developed with such dizzying speed it is hard to take in the implications… Until barely two weeks ago, anti-government demonstrations were unheard of… Now the opposition routinely turns out hundreds of thousands of protesters on the street every day… Last weekend, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad could claim that Iran was "almost completely free"… There were skeptics at the time… Now the foreign media are operating under some of the most sweeping restrictions in the world… So where is this crisis going, and what do the opposition want?...
